if the truck came into the state without a converter, you can get one installed, but it will have to meet California emissions when all is said and done.

Seems like a lot of BS in California. I can go buy a cat & put it on myself here if I want to. All catalytic converters "should" contain Platinum, Palladium & Rhodium, Why are aftermarket ones so affordable?

Because aftermarket ones don't contain those precious metals. That's why a factory unit lasts 200k miles and the aftermarkets last about 50k. Then there is high quality and low quality precious metals. European cars, Toyota and Honda all use high quality metals in their cats. Most american cars don't. That's why Toyota trucks are so popular amongst cat theives. High quality metals and their ride height make for a fast easy haul for theives.

Aftermarket cats are often ceramics and Nickel. Hence why they do not last very long, nor clean your exhaust as efficiently as factory cats. Scrappers don't want aftermarket cats becuase they are only worth their weight in scrap steel.

Thank your lucky stars you're not in California.
They are affordable because they don't contain as much of the precious metals as OEM converters do... and that's why California changed the laws regarding aftermarket converters- to force manufacturers to build better converters that will last instead of burning out in 5-10k miles.

All converters have ceramics involved in their construction, OEM or otherwise. No other way to get the precious metals in to do their job. It's just the doping of the ceramics with the catalyst(s) that makes the difference with regards to performance and life-span.
You don't think that the honeycomb is made of pure Rhodium, Platinum, Palladium and Gold, etc. do you?

If that was the case, the cats would be tens of thousands of dollars. You seem to miss that I work around cats every DAY. Recycling and scrap is my livelyhood. I'm well aware of how they work, what they are worth, and the laws regarding them

Regarding "cheap aftermarket cats", I thought there was a federal law that said all cats had to be guaranteed for 5yrs (no mileage).

maybe so.... but if you can't quote the law, statute or regulation, it's a moot point.
then there's the issue where the installer or supplier of the converter can argue that it was a problem with your engine that caused the failure....
