cam + oversized valves
#21
I have a EB oversize head,268 cam,.20 over motor, and there aint no way Im makin 145 horsepower.I would be shocked if it was 130.Still runs better though.I looked into forced induction and for the 22re its just not worth it.The kit from LCE is 3k,and that doesnt include a fuel controller, for an extra 50 horsepower.I could just swap in a 3rz with no turbo and I come out cheaper, with almost as much power.Hoppin up a 22re is really a pointless exercise, but we are all guilty off it.Reminds me of the guy who put a stroker in his 305 chevy.Only cost him a grand more than a 350.....

I think the reason most of us do it, honestly, is to get that "why would you do that?" responce
I could have done a 3.4 swap, hell maybe even a Lexus V8 swap, for equal to, or MAYBE even a little less than what my motor rebuild cost me (of caurse, I did a LOT of other things during that same time peroid besides the motor)
But I like the end result because it's still stock for what came in the truck, only better
But I do like the reaction I get from people showing it off, especially if they have a bone stock Toyota with a bone stock 22re, lol

Why? Because it's not normal. It's not something everyone would do. It's not something you see every day. You do not now HOW MANY thumbs up, cools, "can I ride in it", "is it fast", "whats it like", that I get. Anything from the imigrant that can't speak engrrish, to the grandma that shouldn't be driving. It's different, and thats what makes it worth it. Yes, of course I could of spend that $3K on another motor, swapped it in and be making an easy 400HP. To me, not worth it. No body ever (not literally) completely stacks out these 22RE's, and I've never personally seen one in front of me.

I agree and understand wearing the 22 badge. It's a very legendary engine and it's got some history, and it's been discussed probaby almost as much as the Chevy 350!
But.... like anything... if you want spend the money on the "badge", you might not get as much out of it as you would if you spent your money on "power"!! But it is the BADGE!!
I think the most cost effective and easiest conversion for "power" in a Toy truck or Runner is the Chevy 4.3!!
But... I could be wrong... and I'd really miss that V-8 sound. I remember standing in a big warehouse with a well-known NASCAR driver and car sitting on scales, and then watching several guys hovering over the engine while is idled..... the sound was unbelieable!! I got a woody!!
gNARLS.

There's where I'm different, once again. Me? I've got a 2002 Vortec 4.8 V8 w/ 5spd auto, wiring harness and ECU..sitting in my garage from when I swapped my brothers GMC with the LQ9. I could easily spend the time and swap in his 300HP V8 that'll roast my tires and tear many things on the street...yet I've still continued with 22.
I will not argue anyones point tho, there ARE much better ways to spend money if you're looking for power.

Impressive or not, doesn't matter to me. It's the sport I partake in, and the fun that I have that I really care about.

I'm too scared to try and drift my PU, even with the 22re I built for it but it's 4wd, and I'm afraid I'll roll it, lol
but she'll kick some wicked doughnuts on wet asfault and or a gravel road which reminds me... anyone ever tried a 4wd doughnut on loose ground, like gravel, or even an icy parking lot or something? that would be so much fun, whipping cyclones

I just put the Rv head with the 268 cam on my truck and like it so far, I never really expected a huge power increase but considering the truck needed a valve job that my local shop quoted me at $550 and a weeks wait. I only spent $678 for the head/cam/timing and full gasket kit. Brand new parts for just a few hundred more it took my father and I one weekend and with school starting back up it needed to be done. With stock exhaust the power band is pretty decent compared to what it was I may add exhaust later but for right now it sure beats trying to commute to chico with 3 cylinders.

My sister lives in chico! I come from the Bay Area tho, so I just drive 505 to I5. Truck has no problem cruisin' 90 the whole way, but is pretty flat. Glad you like your kit Joeseph!
