Are you removing the front diff?
If so, why?

i'll have to look at clearances with the diff and driveshaft. if i can't get the oil pan out cleanly, then i'll have to at least disconnect the driveshaft, if not drop the diff. i want to do as little work as possible, as i don't have all the time in the world. this weekend i want to get as much done as i can, so i can check clearances then. i might be up there on friday, if not saturday morning

I found removing a few motor mount bolts worked rather well when lifting the motor to get the clearance for the pan...IMO much easier.

You can use a floor jack from under the oil pan and then put some 2x4 laying flat as spacers between the motor mounts and remove the jack?

I used a 2x4 and a heavy ratchet strap. Put the strap around the crank. Might want to use a 4x4 though the 2x4 was bending a bit.

Just be very careful!!!

hmm... thanks rob. sounds good. i'll take a look at it this weekend and see about it.

next maintenance: drain. the rig is still full of coolant and oil (or what little oil is left). then i can get the radiator out, all the hoses, and start looking at how to get the oil pan out. also, the hg kit comes friday, and radiator tomorrow. picked up some brass wire wheels yesterday, and i think today i'll inquire as to why my mercury fan has yet to ship

thanks lumpy. i need to be where i can see photoblocked, and i'll look at it later

Jack it from the bell housing/front of tranny perhaps a block of wood under the engine mounts once she is free. Engine hoist will be in the way if you are doing head work... i think.

do i need to remove anything besides the motor mounts to do this? or are there a few more things, like t-case mount, exhaust holder, drive shafts, etc...

Just unbolt the mounts, everything else should let you raise it a few inches up front, if not unbolt the trans mount. The exhaust will be unbolted from the manifold if you are doing a head gasket anyhow.

Now that we are up to 6 pages. Can you give me an order of events so I don't have to reread everything? This will give me an idea of when you plan on needing my expertise(sarcasm)....

uumm... let's see...

i'll refer to "dry" components as not dealing with coolant or oil

-most of the dry parts are out
-the engine itself is still assembled
-i'll be taking off a bunch of stuff this weekend:
- -exhaust
- -start on the intake
- -radiator/hoses
- -p/s bracket and pump
- -a/c (don't know if it needs to, but i'll check)
- -steering stabilizer
-also this weekend: buss-bars
-next weekend is the pick-n-pull (nothing done then)
-the following weekend is the start of my spring break (22-30)
- -22/23: finish taking last parts off (timing cover, pumps, etc)
- -24-26: get engine assembled and running
- -27-30: re-assemble everything else

this is just a rough estimate, based on what i've done already, but it should go a lot faster once i get started this weekend. i probably won't need your expertise until the 23-24, but i'll let you know as the date closes in

Why do you need to remove the engine..?
Are you fully rebuilding it?

not so much "remove" as "lift" so i can get to the oil pan easier without taking the diff off. and i'm only replacing gaskets and the stuff in ted's 4 piece front end kit. i'll be leaving the head assembled (ie- not removing valves or cam). i figure while i have the down-time anyway, i'll throw on the rest of the gaskets and clean up a bit

Well you probably should lap the valves since you have it out. Not a hard job but the springs are fun getting out.
