blown 22re/22rte swap
driving my 87 4runner (22re) 2 days ago it lost all power and wouldnt idle. i limped to my friends house with it and it started pouring bluish smoke out the exhaust and making a click when giving it throttle while the clutch was out. im thinking i blew a head gasket. hopefully thats it but im not sure. i may be able to trade my dirtbike for an 86 22rte. would this bolt up to my w56 trans no problem? i recently did a marlin crawler heavy duty clutch kit so i dont think the clutch will be a problem. would it even be worth it to get the 22rte since i dont actually know if it will run? it comes with everything like the ecu harness ps pump alternator starter etc.
any advice on the motor swap or on what happened to my motor would be appreciated as i am driving my brothers audi around right now and i feel like a tool in it.

blueish smoke is oil. could be head gasket could be rings, but with a click (do you mean maybe a tap or a knock?) I would lean towards a ring and that tap or click that you describe being a piston slap sound. Only way to tell is to do a compression and leakdown check.
could be a few other things as well. But without seeing or hearing what your describing then.....

yea, i could smell the oil burning. it could definitly be a knock, i just didnt wanna say it haha. i could only hear it when the clutch was out though. when i depressed the clutch or put it in neutral and revved it a bit it didnt make it.

so basically saying you got a knock when the engine is under load, typical of a piston slap or slight rod knock. Don't think it's a rod knock though since it's burning oil.
I've been wrong before, but in either case, I think the motor would have to come apart. Personally I would stay away from the rte. But that's just me.

An RTE is just a de-compressed RE with different electronics and computers.
It has a junk stock turbo, the CT20, that you're immediately better off just throwing in the junk pile.
You have NO idea what you're in for.
It's not particularly even a good engine.

haha, i live a couple of miles from hopewell. still cant decide what i wanna do. i might just sell the dirtbike so i can rebuild the 22-re and do some aftermarket work to it. the turbo motor would be cool but i dont really wanna deal with it. where can i get a good rebuild kit? i'll probly do a cam too. any advice there?

this is because the higher the overlap the lower the vacuum tends to become correct? Also typically what causes a loping idle.

Not that I looked, but all I saw was "85-95".
Coincidentally the deck heights, not specifically EFI.
And good posting on the vids. If you can live with that lope, more power to ya
