it took me a few months to casually fix my BHG...on a 7m. it was summer though...lol....so i had no need for a ride. had other cars to use.
anyway....i bet you could do it in a weekend if you plan ahead and order the crap early.... take a good long look at your engine and figure out what you'll need so you wont have to wait for parts to arrive in the middle of it all.

I am sure I could do the HG but just not in timely fashion. I dont have another vehicle to drive so i want it done yesterday : )
I talked to the mechanic again last night and asked a few more questions.
Turns out it isnt the HG and he hasnt removed the head yet.
It looks like the coolant from the RAD drained into the pan through the timing chain cover. Then during my few quick checks and adding water to the RAD. Then the Shops checks and adding water to the RAD. All of which ended up in the pan. Brought the milkshake oil level up high enough that when they turned the engine over it pumped the milkshake into all 4 cyclinders via the PCV system.
at any rate it looks like a timing set will be replaced with tensioner and guides.
and of course the timing chain housing is being welded up.
Any more info I should check on?

flushing out your engine so that crap is GONE. moisture = bad. i've heard different things, some things more technical saying that even a tiny bit can be pretty bad....but every case is different.
i'd definitely invest in some oil to clean out the engine, run it for a while, dump that once it shows signs of collecting the milky crap in your engine and then refill with new oil and a fresh filter. then change filters again.... something around that. just try and get the oil back to normal.
umm...if there's oil in your cooling system...i'd flush that as well and refill with fresh.
since its under the wrench i'd change all the fluids.....but then again you might wait until the expensive stuff is done and you know you dont have to spend more on NEEDED reapairs.
why did it eat a hole in the first place? worn guides? i'm not familiar with timing chains....just belts

He took carb cleaner and a strong detergent to all the parts that can be reached. I stopped by and looked at it yesterday it looks pretty clean so far.
He also suggested running a motor flush treatment through the engine.
Then he will put a new filter and oil back in.
I will change the oil in another week just for good measure.
"why did it eat a hole in the first place? worn guides? i'm not familiar with timing chains....just belts"
It is my understanding that the chain stretches and starts eating up the guides and then eventually the cover.
I did look at the old guides and new ones. The old one on the drivers side took all the abuse it appears.
The truck should be ready today.

This happened to a buddy of mines RE, two head gaskets later he found the problem. He never had any weird running or power loss, just was loosing coolant and making oil.

I am on this emotional roller coaster and I want off!!!!!!!!!!
The shop just called. After they finished cleaning up all the parts and before reassymbling the engine. They did a compression test. The 2 middle cylinders only have 90 pounds the 2 outer cylinders are at 130.
He thinks we should pull the head and check it since the engine is this far apart.
I agree..unfortunatley : (

I know the feeling.... I had about 5 days of the emotionl roller coaster ride in late May, early June. In a period of 5 days we found out we were pregnant, found out I was going to afghan, blew the hg in my rig, and the wifes runner had a knock (turned out to be nothing), but both rigs went out with in 24 hours of each other, and half way inbetween both of them dying i found out I was leaving... oh yeah then two weeks later some idiot pullued out in front of us and crunched the runner... so our only rig was a rental... June was a stressful emotional month....
Keep your head up, your truck will be good again in no time....

luckily where he was at already pulling the head is pretty easy. And even though it didnt get hot it got warm, and with the low coolant may have gotten steam, so checking the head for warpage is probally a good idea anyhow.

Hopefully this is the last chapter on this repair.
Just talked to the shop.
The gasket was not blown. Turns out the oil\coolant(they said it was like grease) mixture that got pumped into the head had blocked a couple of passage ways in the head. They cleaned the head thoroughly while was off and put a new gasket on. The compression check has all cyclinders in the 130-140 range now.
The motor flush is being done now and I will pick it up after work.
I may go into shock when I see the bill though.
Thanks for the info and support
