base timing
cant seem to get back to base timing, eventho ive jumpered the terminals on the diagnostic connector. i got there once but i think i may have crossed to another terminal and shorted out something. is that possible or is there a fuse some where that may be blown? sorry its a 22re 1993

Make sure you get a good connection in the terminals. I tried using a paperclip but it wasn't wide enough to fit into the terminals snug so I made a little jumper wire with connectors I had to crimp onto the end and it fits so much better. I just used it today to set the timing on the replacment '94 engine I put into my truck.

base timing again - is the engine running right?
ok let me start from the beginning. im not sure it is running correctly. i bought a complete used jasper from a junk yard. i had to change the tps connector and the distributor connector to match up from my old eng to the replacement. when i started the motor, the cold idle was way too high, about 3000 rpm. i couldnt get it to idle back, so i started messing with the tps rather than the idle screw thinking that it was somehow out of adjustment because that was the only thing that was changed. but i put the tps back to the orig position. i finally found what i believe is the idle screw on the air intake and turned it down about 2 turns and got it back to normal idle, about 750 rpm at normal operating temp. then i tried to set the base timing and jumpered e1 and te1. one jumper fell out while it was running and i believe that may have grounded out something. i have not been able to get back to base idle since that happened. with the jumper in, the cel is on with the ign switch on and while it is running (still jumpered). with the jumper out and running no cel. right now im just setting the timing but ear, adj so the eng is responsive and no pinging is noted. sure would like to get back to base, do u think ive somehow shorted out the ecm computer?

if its still running you cant have done too much damage.
put the jumper in, and turn the ign to "on" (keep the engine off) and check for any codes.
you sure you got the tps adjusted correctly? if it isnt the idle wont drop down, and it wont drop to base timing.
ps. get a timing light instead of doing it by ear.
