My only thought is, if its a $15 part that could save you from potentially expensive engine damage caused from overheating...its worth it.

Yeh, it's not a $15 part. It's more like $35 on ebay, and a left arm from the stealership. I would just rather spend the 35 bucks on something else if the part is more of a gimmick.

No, it is most defantly not a gimmick. Simple. The shroud concentrates the fans force on the radiator. Without it the fan is not as efficiant thus the rad is not able to cool the coolant fast enough.

They can be had for cheap. Don't use ebay, shipping gets you everytime. Local, look on craigslist! You can find people parting 4runners out all the time!

A shroud is going to be a shroud no matter what...the stealership probably uses high tech polymer plastics that are near bullet proof in theirs..

My OEM one was plastic...it got brittle over time...I did a couple ziptie and epoxy fixes, but that only goes so far.

Anyone ever thought about the safety issue? If you wanna adjust something or do something in the engine bay, the lack of a shroud could be a big danger to the un aware!

I had a whole explanation about the difference between trying to suck up soda through a mcdonalds straw held about 1/2 above the soda surface, then taping that straw to a funnel and having the funnel edge flush with the liquid, and telling me which one gets more soda... equivelant to a fan without a shroud and a fan with a shroud.
but I'm too drunk to elaborate more on it.

Depends if I have any clean ones left.

Building a shroud is always an option if you need one (I've built a few in the past) Thin sheet aluminum is fairly easy to work with.
