Another tailgate window thread (1st Generation)

I have a problem with the tailgate window. First, I believe the key switch is shot. once in a great while with a lot of wiggling, the window will go down. I've bypassed the wiper switch, the lock switch on the console, the lock switch in the tailgate, and the top bolt switch. The console switch will roll the window up, but not down. The window will roll down with power applied to the motor. I've jumpered the console switch and it won't go down, just up...not even a relay click going down. Looking at the schematic, I believe the window won't operate in either direction if one of the safety switches are open. I'm beginning to lean towards the relay module being the problem. I'm not sure what the switch i circled in the schematic is. Back door control switch? I'm about to put my own relay and a momentary DPDT switch and eliminate the whole relay module if I don't figure it out soon. Any advice would be great.

Here's some test info from the Toyota EWD manual.
If you need an image of the schematic that shows what color wire goes where lmk.
The one item you didn't mention was the rear wiper motor. If that blade isn't parked properly the window won't work.

The schematic with the wire colors will be very helpful. I found a service manual on pdf, but it didn't include the fold out color coded schematic like some service manuals have. I checked the wiper arm was retracted and tried it with the top plugged in and not plugged in. To me, my schematic shows the window operable when that circuit is open, so I didn't jumper that one. My interpretation of the schematic tells me that the window would not go in either direction if one of the switches is malfunctioning. It does go up by the switch. I will go through the checklist you provided before I do anything else. The part I circled in the schematic I now figure has to be the key switch. If I narrow it down to the relay board, i have a relay that will fit it if I can figure which relay the down relay is. I saw a picture of one labeled, but my board is different. Over the years, and many 4runners, I've had lots of rear window issues, but it's never been the relay board.

That part you circled is the electric switch that the keyed lock goes into. Much like the ignition, you can remove the keyed lock and turn it with a screw driver.
here’s the schematic showing the wire colors. L=blue, B=Black, BR=brown, G=green, GR=gray, LG=light green. The rest are pretty obvious(R=red etc)

Thanks for the advice of taking the lock cylinder out. I didn't think of that. Your schematic is more helpful than what I have. Looking at your schematic, it seems that if I ground the G-Y wire at the switch. I don't see the rear wiper park switch in this schematic though. I really need to break down and buy a factory service manual but I really don't want to get off $150 for one.

I would say $150 well spent.
Is the hard top bolt that allows the tailgate window operation fastened correctly?

This schematic really helped. The G-Y wire on relay terminal #4 has no continuity between the window switch and the relay board. When I grounded the #4 terminal at the board, the window rolled down. I ran another wire from the switch to the relay and....it works. Thanks for the help.

That wire goes through the window lock switch, then to the relay. That lock feature tricked more than a few techs diagnosing window issues bitd. On all the Toyota models, not just the trucks/4Runners.

Thanks for posting the video. I always wondered why the window had a streak on it. I thought it was lithium grease. Time to secure the wiring better before I'm troubleshooting more window problems.

Good video bud, thank you, it covers 90% of all the info I've discovered and forgotten over the years ha ha, thanks for the tune up! There is one detail I am struggling with though.
What controls the final 'park' motion on the wiper? I seem to remember when it was working properly that when you switch off the wiper it would self park thus allowing you to open/close the window.
