A faulty chain tensioner can cause "chain rattle" intermediately.

Duckie, just a word of advice. If you look in there and find the timing chain does need replacing, don't continue to drive it that way. I did this waiting until I could get a new kit. Blam!!! Bent six valves. I figured I had time.

Unfortunatly, I have to take that risk. This is my only means of transportation. For all I know, I could pull the cover and already find metal guides and a good chain. The PO didn't neglect it, but I do't know if he tackled any major maintanance, as this was his hunting truck.

On another strange note, so since I got this runner last July, I was getting around 300km per tank. For some reason, my last two fill ups, I have gotten over 400km on the tank. Nothing has changed as far as I know, I still drive the same distance, about the same amount of time during the week. Would the hotter summer weather cause better gas milage?

(sorry for the km, truck is actually canadian, I just know it has 160k miles because I did the conversion.)

What a ridiculous risk to take.

Fix it and have one day of down time, or blow it up and have a week of down time.

It is a ridiculous risk, but I'm not made of $$$. So either way I have to drive it, and I can't order the kit until next friday. Unless someone wants to buy it and ship it to me, which is cool too lol.

On another note, it dosn't seem like there are too many special tools for this project. I was trying to make a list of anything I might need to rent for this. Like a pully puller or timing light gun. I'm missing a few common sockets (1/4" 14mm, 3/8" 14mm and 15mm) out of my set, so I'll find out real quick if I need them lol. I also don't currently have a 3/8" drive ratchet, been using a 1/2 with a 3/8 extesion.

92 TOY, I just read your thread from start to finish. Really, really great job. Its weird that it actually took 8 months, reading it over the last 2 hours. I'm not planning on taking off the head, so I'm sure that will cut down on the time hopefully.

I guess I can say is good luck, then. But, for the cost of rebuilding the engine IF you throw the chain, you could rent a car. Consider, if it's rattling now and wears just enough to break the chain or skip a couple of gears, the pistons will most likely hit the valves. Some have gotten real lucky and no damage occurred. But, all I did was try to start my vehicle in a parking lot. Sounded someone threw a bolt in a can. Then, it was dead.

Actually I don't think I can rent a car. I'm only 23, so even if I did, the insurance would be redicilously expensive. I've already gotten some postive feedback from locals on lending a hand, so when it goes down it will be taken care of. I am curious as to the condition of the cover, chain, and guides. Hopefully this Friday I can pop the valve cover off and sneak a peak.

It's probably going to be just fine, then. Sounds like you know how you want it to go. And, I may just be overly alarmed for you.....

You know its funny, the more I've thought about it, the more I've been freaking out like "OMFG please don't blow up" everytime I start it lol. I have a 26 mile commute 4-5 days a week, and nothing would grind my gears more than my truck taking a dump at 10pm 13 miles from home lol.

I'm getting pretty excited to dive in, I haven't been this far into an engine in a couple of years. Plus I want the chance to clean up the engine a little bit.
