i have a similar problem
have a 91 toyota p'up 22re motor.only 207k miles the engine got hot, checked oil looked ok.a week later noticed engine losing coolant. checked oil and water/coolant was mixed in.drove to radiator shop, no air bubles in coolant, normally that indicates a head gasket leak. drove it home took off timing chain cover, found
out that chain guide had broken and chain was wearing a groove out in cover.there was a groove worn in the cover but no visible crack. then took off head, looked ok, the head bolts were hard to get out of the the head because i think the exhaust residue was builtup in the area of the stuck head bolts, about three of them were really hard to get loose.took head to machine shop had head cleaned and 4 exhaust valves replaced along with valve guides and seals got gaskets and cover for about 350.00.had mechanic
friend look at rod bearings, he said they looked to be in good shape, so i am not rebuilding the block. so now all i have to do is clean everything up and reassemble. i hope i can remember where everything goes, luckily my buddy can help me get through it.i still am not sure if it was a head gasket or timing chain cover, so i did both. probably saved over $1,000. bucks doing it myself. but is taking me forever because i work full time. i will get it done eventually.
