Gosh, the manual is pretty clear about how to change the shims (I assume you're not messing with the lifters). You DON'T remove the cam.
Of course, it's much more do-able with the right tool.

All put back together, valves nice and quiet now, no smoke out of the tail pipe, and runner smooth.
Ignition timing set, got a cap and rotor coming in Thurs.
Looks like it will be time to take it to get smogged soon.
