94 4runner 3.0 engine ticking noise help
Hi guys, I'm pretty new to all this so any info or tips would be super helpful.
my engine has developed a louder ticking noise, it ticks quieter at idle but when I accelerate the ticking noise gets way louder. one day it wasn't doing the loud accelerating ticking and the next day after driving about 150 miles it started. oil levels were fine.
took it to the shop and one mechanic thought it was a bad rocker arm but wasn't sure without taking off my valve cover, one mechanic thought it could be a bad lifter.
after looking around on the forums I also thought I may just need to adjust my valve lash clearance??
I'm attaching a video for a clearer idea of the noise.

Rod? Cam chain slapping? Could also be valve adjustment. Only way to know if it is valve clearance is to open the valve cover. Easier and faster to just do it than to fret about it. That's my experience over the last 20 years of wrenching.

Hi:
The 3.0 V6 engine doesn't have rocker arms on the head.
It is an overhead cam engine, and the valve lash is done by using hardened shims of various thicknesses.
There is no timing chain, but rather a composite fabric Gilmer belt to sync the crank, and the two cams
Use a long screwdriver as a stethescope, hold it against your ear bone, and probe each valve cover while the motor is running at the speed where the noise is the loudest.
This could give you a clue, or at least a place to start troubleshooting.
