You need to do a pressure test on the cooling system to see if:
A. It holds pressure
B. You notice if any coolant is leaking out anywhere.
That will tell you if it is the radiator, water pump or head gasket.
Also get a tester for your coolant that shows if there are hydrocarbons in the coolant.
Both testers should be available at a parts store and should be available for rent.
Then come back and let us know what you found and we can go from there.

So what I'm hearing is pray like hell it's the HG but be prepared if it's more... got it. I gotta get some crap out of the garage next week and move it in I guess. My cousin offered to come lend a hand and get it knocked out in a day... but if it's the head, that'll take some time to get. UGH. I love my Yota and it's never left me stranded... but I'm not really a fan of breakdowns

if you have yet to do the timing chain may as well put that on the chopping block as well if it's even close to being due now is the time to do it. The head gasket job took me 2 days. First day was to remove the head and get it to the machine shop. Second was picking up the head and reinstalling it. Could have done it in one day but the down time with the machine shop is what slowed me down. If you're under some really tight time constraints might want to think about getting the head and eliminating the machine shop time and the risk of the head being cracked. Usually it cost money to even have them check the head and if you end up with a cracked head your out time and money to find another head. Just some stuff to ponder. In the mean time start reading and searching now for the head gasket removal and the fsm so you have a head start on it.

"it doesn't look good"- crap
"but on every 22re I've been in there's oil in the intake"- OK so maybe this isn't so bad
"but it's never been that nasty with the whiteish looking stuff"- CRAP
Quit toying with my emotions!
I'm hoping just a couple hours from now I will have the head off... HOPEFULLY
I will post more pics and let you all know what I find.

OK so I finally got the head taken off (almost 2 weeks ago now) and we've upgraded to high speed internet. Yay. easier photo uploads. But anyway...
Nothing conclusive yet. I'll post the pictures on here early next week and you all can chime in.

Got my new parts in about an hour ago from engnbldr.
Unpacking it, I must say I love engnbldr. It was neatly boxed up all nice and snug using local news paper. Awesome to see.... reminds me how much I miss living in Oregon.
OK enough of that...
Head gasket set w/ head bolts.
Looks like I better get busy this week....

Friday and Saturday I'm gonna hit it hard. I have no excuses now. I'd love to do it more on the side of "right" but I have got to get this back on the road. Spending way too much money in gas in the V8. It doesn't exactly have to last very long either, so if I miss something and I lose the HG again in a few months, I'll have the funds to fix it right (or take it to someone and have them deal with it) I'm only going to be driving it for about 5 more months before it sits for 3 months before it gets towed to VA and sits for about a year, before it gets towed somewhere else and sits for at least another year. I know having vehicles sit without being driven is sometimes harder on them than being driven daily, but it's not like I will have much of a choice.
Anywho I will take plenty of pics and get them posted this weekend. Everyone cross your fingers and PRAY!

So I got everything prepped this morning/afternoon. Tonight, went to drop the head into place, and SNAP... Broke my pass side timing chain guide... UGH
So much for having it back on the road this weekend.
