93 third member on an 86
I have the opportunity to buy the following third member...http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/pts/1021362263.html
I will likely just be buying the third member, not the entire rear end.
My question is: will this fit in my 86 4x4 pickup?
Does this seem like a good deal?

There are 8" diffs with 5 lug. I believe they are all 2wd with either the 6cyl, 1ton, and there was another but I cannot remember it... So it could be an 8" or 7.5".

There are two pinion 8" differentials and there are four pinion 8" differentials. Then there is something called the "high pinion" differential. I think I was wrong about substituting between the 2 pinion and 4 pinion rear differentials -- it appears to not be a problem. For some reason I had myself convinced that they had different axle spline counts.

2 pinion = 4cyl diff
4 pinion = v6 diff, did come w/ 4.88 gears, i did the swap on my 86, they came out of a 93 runner for $300 front and rear. no set up just swap thirds. then you can get a lunch box locker for around $250 and have a locked rear and 4.88s for a $550 a lot faster, easier and cheaper.

well I just heard back from the seller. It's a 7.5", so i guess switching it out is not compatible.
However, he is selling the entire rear end. Will it work if I switch out everything? Or will I have difficulties elsewhere, such as in connecting the rear drive shaft?

It's a 2wd then it's more than likely spring under, so that would need to be changed. Also being a 7.5" I believe it's 27 spline - so you couldn't change the axleshafts to keep the 6 bolt (31 spline), you would end up with 6bolt front and 5 bolt rear - so in short no!
