93 ECM part number question

I have a 1993 4x4 22re manual transmission standard cab DLX pickup. I have been chasing a couple of ignition error codes. I was original was receiving a code 12 RPM Signal no NE signal is input to ECM for 2 secs or more after STA turns ON. As well as a code 13 RPM signal NE signal is not input to ECM for 300msec or more when engine speed is 1500rpm or more. The symptoms of rough running first showed during a rain storm and over a period of several months particuliarly in wet weather, continued to degrade the driveablity of the truck. I have checked the readings of the distributor module out finding them in spec. I have also replaced the wiring to the distributor module from the ignitor as it seemed questionable. The wiring from the ignitor to just past the diagnostic port was also replaced as I was having issue with where the wiring came through the intake manifold failing the wiggle test and running even worse. Lastly I have replaced the ignitor and coil. All of this has not led to an improvement in the operation of the engine. Once again I was focusing on issues under the hood due to the truck’s performance in the rain.

All of this brings me to my question basically this leaves the ECM as the last bit that is affected. Unfortunately I do not have access to another ECM to try swapping out and seeing if this corrects my issues. The ECM will not even flash up the trouble codes now when placing the jumper wire in the diagnostic port. My ECM is a part #89661-35830 which apparently is a module they are proud of https://www.fs1inc.com/89661-35830-1...plug-play.html (no knowledge of this vendor just a site I found listing it) versus part #89661-35840 https://www.fs1inc.com/89661-35840-1...plug-play.html at half the cost. Looking at this page http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/Images/22RE-ECU-Table.gif for a 1993 model year it lists both #89661-35830 and #89661-35840 as used in the manual transmission 4x4 pickup. What would the difference be between these two part numbers that may be affected in operation?

Thanks

Well, according to the chart you linked, 35830 is for 4Runner with a Manual Transmission, 35840 is for a 4Runner with an Automatic transmission, both with Federal Emissions.

They are both showing that it is also for a Manual Transmission pickup, but the rest is cut off. Is there a difference between the two pickups further along in the portion of them both that is cut off, I don't know. Maybe one has a long bed, one a short bed, one is Federal, one is Canada, one is a 4 speed, one is a 5 speed, whatever. From the last visible character on the 35830 line, I suspect one's a 5 speed and one's a 4 speed, but I may be wrong.

Not super helpful, but the best I can do...

Testing is better than guessing, you're looking at something in the range of 100-200 to get an hour of diagnostics from someone qualified to hook up an oscilloscope that can provide you with a clear picture of what is actually reaching the computer..

Testing the resistance of the signal generator coil (NE coil) just tells you it's not open circuit and almost nothing else.

Just because you replaced wires doesn't mean they are good, or were bad, they are subject to all kinds of possible partial failure modes.

Regardless you should only use an exact match ECM part number unless you are prepared to deal with any ramifications that pop up.

Good luck on your search and if you find any in stock let me know please. My father has a 93 t100 with the same ecu and fs1 has played him of $900 for it sadly just to let you know. They keep saying something happened during programming but yeah that’s where we are at with them and it’s been like 2 months.

I have a 1993 4x4, 22R-E 4 cyl engine, standard cab, standard bed and it was misfiring like crazy with NO trouble code lights on the dash with TE and E jumped in the DLC. No codes nothing. After checking the plugs, distributor cap, rotor, ignition pickup I went to the FSM and followed their troubleshooting flow chart. In the end it said try another ECM so I bought one online on Ebay and tried it. It was a 35830 and it fired up nicely, and ran smooth. I checked for trouble with the DLC TE and E jumped and it blinked steadily showing normal. I also read that this is a popular truck and ECMs are hard to come by as it gets snatched up quickly. Good Luck!

I ended up finding a ECM on ebay. My truck is back operational.

The Toyota part number is 89661-35830. Part numbers 8966135830, 896613583084, 896613D120, and 89661-3D120 are also the Toyota numbers for a compatible unit. I’ve also found some aftermarket part numbers ECM’s Cardone 72-1369, Blue Streak ECC9731M, and Napa NEC XTP21369.

YotaYard http://yotayard.com or Yoda Jim’s https://www.yodajims.com in the Denver area and White Toyota in Vonore, Tn were all other resources suggested to me to pursue looking for an ECM. I don't have any knowledge or dealings with any of these shops though.

I have been dealing with FS1 lately also. The last correspondence were that they would be willing to repair my unit if I send it in. They would not respond to my inquiry about how that would be an improvement over the alleged several units that they have but are unable to test functionality of.
