maybe i wasn't being detailed enough, but in my brain it stands to reason that in moving the crankshaft, it moves the cam, so by hodling the cam steady, i am holding the crank steady.

some progress...but head is still on (pictures downloading)

i will skip to the end. i cn't get the crankshaft bolt off. there's alot of play....if i have the wrench on at the 3 'clock position, it moves without moving the cam all theway to about the 12 or 11 o'clock position. that's 1 problem. the other is that i guess the old push-and-pull techniqueisn't gonna do it. i'm gonna have to wait until one of my neihbors gets home to see if i can borrow some muscle.

got the exhaust manifold off and all included....almost sent myself to the ER with an eye injury even though i was wearing safety glasses...metal in the eye...got it out...i know a good trick (pays to do that stuff for a living).

i was all ready to just get that crankshaft bolt ff and pull the head but i guess i'm stopped......oh wait, i have it in neutral, i'm a dork! i guess i will put it in drive, in 4 low and see what happens.

NAH!

put it in drive, in 4 low, i thought the bolt would hold stilll. still turned very easily, and the truck was not moving. so i stopped. waiting for further instructions.

this might not be the safest way but when i pulled mine i just stuck a large screwdriver in the holes of the camshaft gear to hold it in place and pulled on it with a breaker bar. Other times on other engines similar to the 22re i just used an impact gun to take it off. My methods might not be the best and safest but have worked for me thus far. You might want to try it if you don't want to run to the parts store for more tools. Take my advice with a grain of salt but like i said it worked for my 22re. good luck!

that sucks!!!! I have an extra one i can ship to you. pm me if interested I won't charge you anything i feel bad. if you need the part let me know and i'll send it out asap. Get a puller from the auto parts store and go that route. my apologies i'm supprised that didn't happen to me, i guess i got lucky.

1/2 in air wrench time put it gear and giver hell or if you can still turn it over with the key put the breaker bar on the frame and turn the key once or twice that should do it worked for me but I did that before tearing anything down.

dude, don't worry about it...that part goes in the garbage anyway when i order all my ENGNBLDR stuff........Timing chain kit / cover / etc etc etc.......

OLHARLEY.......um , yeh, i don't have my distributor on anymore along with ALOT of other stuff......i'm gonna see if my neighbor is home yet.....he works on bulldozers he should know what to do.

at this point i think that sprocket might be worthless as an anchor point. probably fractured at the center as well, so somebody may get hurt.

no impact gun at my house.i'd have to borrow one. i'm still puzzled by this "put it in 5th" (i can't it's an auto),"chock the wheels" etc...stuff. im supposed to keep this at TDC (0-mark on front) and when i turn it i definitely have alot of movement.

that's OK on the part. i will be getting all new front end stuff shortly.

stick a screwdriver where your start is and jam up the flywheel.

Keeping it in first gear should stop the motor from turning..... (yes auto's can shift into first gear while not running).

I've used screwdrivers to jam the flywheel, crankshaft pulley, crowbars... anything to get the bolt to 'break' loose.

UP to you to figure out what works for your situation.

Ok this is how tightened and loosened mine get a good size piece of rope go around the pulley and the tentioner pulley, get a stick or screw drive and tighten the rope by twisting
a lot. it will hold everything from twisting if you tighten the rope real tight.
