92 Toy- sorry I haven't been more supportive after rippin' on you this morning, I have been pretending to actually work all day today...

More info coming in appx. 1 hr.

don't worry about it.

i needed a good forehead punch to motivate me....i would have been feeling bad if i don't clean the valves.

just didn't like the amount of prying it took to get the rail off....but i have heard others say the same thing about it and even the FSM says something about it.

today's episode will hopefully go by way of the following......

-get the youngest off to school....oldest boy home again with fever and nothing else...."you better get him checked..." she says....."for what?" I says.....I think she forgets what I do for a living....SHEESH!

-make a run to Auto-Zone and get that thingy....I will be getting the one that XXXTRREME22R posted up.....looks like the least likely to amputate a body part....gotta get me one of those fancy little magnet pen things...so I can be cool.

short list....maybe actually will do the valves........I saw a posting where someone put their valve in a drill press for cleaning.....of course, I don't have a drill press...will have to Maguiver something up.....stay tuned for creativity.

hey...I just sprayed PB Blaster in the house....now it's gonna stink up the place............

I've had this uneasy feeling ever since I mixed up those studs for the water pump that were actually meant for the fan clutch....so now I'm trying to remove the actual studs for the water pump from the old one to switch out with the ones i put in last week......hopefully can do that w/o a problem....we will see.

Ok....that part is done.....everything is the way it should be.

so for those of you playing along at home....REMEMBER....the little ziploc baggie Ted includes with the water pump that has the 4 studs in it, those are for the fan clutch....NOT the water pump...you have to re-use the ones for the water pump.....very important!!!!!!

of course, it couldn't go without incident....figures.....stripped out a hole for the one...I made sure to only do 1 at a time so as to not compromise the gasket / sealer that is all set already.......that bolt I used RED threadlocker on......if it fails, it the one directly on top , so I should e able to see it right away....not sure what i would do about it , but at least i will see it.

question on the valve cleaning thing.......

1 valve at a time eh?? or do I take them all out and clean everything and them put them back. I'm guess either way is fine, just have to keep one million parts in order.

suggestions .......

Oh and a shopping list.....

valve spring compressor thingamajig..
magnet thingy
very small bottle brush thing for cleaning the passages (see i was reading the FSM)

Ok....change of plans....not going to the store.....have to go to work tomorrow (my day off) for training for a few hours and since the store is like a mile away from work....versus 20 miles from here, will go there tomorrow.

so, today's episode will be to clean out the head bolt holes with q-tips and acetone and wipe the top of the block clean one more time and maybe, just maybe, put the timing chain back on and bolt on the cover.

maybe.

Do one valve at a time just to be sure you keep everything strait.

eye, eye....

just got done cleaning out the bolt holes one last time.

acetone in dixie cup = not smart

but after that little "spill".....cleaned out the holes perfect....very happy...now I know the bolts won't bottom-out on anything...no old oil, no crud, no nothing.....a time consuming process ...between running the bolt in and out to clean the threads to doing what I just did.....about 50 q-tips and acetone and you are good to go.

When I did my valves I pulled all the springs off the intake side and kept the springs in order. Then I lapped those 4 and put the springs back on and then did the exhaust.

I wish someone would send me a brand new 268 cam...........now's the time I would do it.

Honestly , I was VERRRRRY unhappy when I took that rail off....was way harder than it should have been, I think. That's one of those things that made me so hesitant about doing it....that and I didn't know what I was doing..........but I watched a few videos and think I could do it kinda easily and use those shiny new valve stem seals TED sent.

I didn't swap the valve stem seals probable should of but I didn't.

The rail just was gunked up a bit not to worry...Mine was tough coming out but after I had it all cleaned it went in just fine.

If you valves look to be decent you should be alright with a good lapping. Now if you had a burnt one I'd consider changing them. But that's just me.

Save your 50 bucks because even if you did buy new ones you would still have to lap them for the sake of the valve seats matching the new valves just right.
