10.
that's a pain in the nuts to try to hold here and there and this and that at the same time.........taping off the tensioner almost worked for like a minute but the spring is quite strong for masking tape.
was re-reading the FSM....looks like I'm doing it right. will re-read Roger's (4Crawler's) write-up to compare notes.

POSTED THIS ON YOTAROB's thread................
back to business...
as far as the water pump install goes....pretty much straight forward...3 studs that you thread in to the holes....I used the same configuration as my old one...except had trouble figuring this out because there's a short end and a long end to the stud and either way they don't stick far enough out of the water pump housing to get a bite....so I short threaded them so they would stick out. was able to torque down (69 in/lbs...kinda alot if you ask me) and ended up spinning a stud out....took the threads and all with it...so I exchanged holes with a bolt and all was well...hope this doesn't turn into a problem for me...but if it does I know which one it is.
I will email Ted and tell him maybe need longer studs........Otherwise it was all good.
everybody seems to be telling me to use the gaskets dry. the water pump I put blue rtv on it....i guess i didn't have to...don't see anywhere that i had to do that but i did it anyway.
half a mind to put the cover on now, but I will wait until saturday (work all day tomorrow).

Wow, lots of progress today. Looking good.
I did a lot of searching and found differing recommendations about the water pump gasket. Installing dry has a following. Some have had leaks after using RTV, probably from using too much. Others have had good luck using a thin skim coat. I used High Tack spray on both sides of mine.
I wiped a thin skim coat of gray RTV all over my timing cover gaskets, but regretted it almost immediately. Messy, and maybe even counterproductive. We'll see. I wouldn't do that again. Maybe just a little around the water passages. Or maybe just some High Tack.
Don't use any sealant on your head gasket to block junction. Put some tiny dabs on the timing cover where the manual shows.
Opinions also seem to differ on what, if anything, to use on the intake gasket. Couldn't find very much info about that. I ended up using a Fel-Pro that had a pre-applied bead of sealant. What do others use?
My water pump from Engnbldr came with 4 new studs for the fan clutch, but not the 3 studs that (along with the other bolts) hold the pump to the timing cover. If you're confusing the fan clutch studs for the pump studs that could explain why they are too short. I reused the ones from my old timing cover.

Hmmm, I was looking at this, and I didn't see any matchmarks on the timing chain. These would normally be shiny silver links, there should be two silver links on the cam sprocket side, and a single silver link on the crank sprocket side. Am I just missing these in the pic, or are they on the backside?
