Just want to vent.....
The other day, went to start my son's truck after it was sitting for about greater than a month....DEAD!....so then there was the "did you leave a light on?" etc etc etc.....so today I took MY battery and put it in his and DEAD too. What the he__? My battery has been sitting in the back of my truck for pobably 2 months now. they were both bought new. so it's all just stupid. i don't have a charger, but i may ask the garage guy to charge it when it comes time that i really need them. i don't right now, just had to move his truck so i could get in the garage attic to get some decorations down. so i had to push his truck.
OK. I'm done.

92, I see your still stalled at the pan removal. I'll give you some advice that I normally only give to very close friends. Pull the engine, get the mess cleaned up, get every thing cleaned up and painted that won't be going off to the machine shop or else where to be worked on and place it on clean rags in the bed of the truck. (ok, I know your not pulling the engine)
Now the hard part, force your self to find the money to finish this off! It's time to get extream here, start your own cult, get some cardboard, a sharpie and a freeway off ramp, moon lite as a leg breaker, some thing to get this moving forward before you lose interest and your truck becomes garage art!

92 Toy-Thanks for this thread! I am also a total newbie, just about to rip into my 22re. Timing chain, new head, and cam. Oh man am I nervous. Your post helps boost my confidence, and I love the detail. Haynes and Chilton can be so vague and if you don't know the lingo--forget it. To all of you offering help, you guys seem great too.

^^TXclimber, how long have you had your 86? I sold a blue 86 4runner in texas a few years ago and the front of yours looks similar. It doesn't have a marlin crawler transmission by any chance does it? Mine had the same front brush guard as yours and the silver mirrors. I sold it to a guy from Austin back in 06. It had 224K miles at the time.
Sorry for the thread hijack 92, but I swear that is my old 4Runner^^^

I knew it! How many miles on it now?
It's got two small stripes down the sides right?
Did you do anything to the seats?
I miss that truck, I never should of sold it. It's nice to see it's still running though. I drove that thing all over dirt roads in northern california.
If it's ever for sale again let me know.

I guess some things you always recognize. Still has the cheesy '80s pin stripes too.
I'm rollin' with 290k but my head gaskets leaking and I'm loosing coolant. Had to have that transmission rebuilt last spring.
I got some real nice seats out of an '89 4runner a couple of years ago. Put new springs in the rear and got rid of that sag. New BFG TA's. Beat up and looks great. I don't remember what I paid you for it, but I got my money's worth long ago! 4wheel low and that truck goes anywhere I point it, and with the "no worries" paint job it's very forgiving. Could you PM me with any info you can remember about it's previous engine rebuild. I think I remember you telling me it was bored 20 over?

That sucks about the marlin tranny. I had it put in at around 220K in 05, so that means it failed after three years. That's not a good testament to marlin's quality. Are you sure the head gasket is leaking and the timing chain hasn't worn a hole in the cover like 92Toy's thread here?

This is a realistic thread.....in as much as being a total newbie when I first started it and I ask / will ask alot of questions.
I could not imagine doing any of this without YOTATECH or a computer or a digital camera.
My only regret right now is that I really don't have the extra $$$$ to make this repair.....I'm not going to go on and on about that anymore....but really and truly it's only going to cost less than $300 to do it. Unfortunately, in my life, this repair is NOT a priority and this has turned into more of a science project for me than a repair....figuring out how stuff works and why.
So, for how disgusted I am on a daily basis with myself, it's VERY ENCOURAGING to me when someone says they are using my thread for info and encouragement. Makes it all worthwhile.
TANX!!

As far as you guys, I enjoy hearing about finding your truck you gave up for sale.
