As you can see, some decent damage to it. I blame the 12-point socket and te socket that broke.

Really wasn't that bad. Pounded an impact wrench socket on wth a small sledge (known as an "SFH" in the Fire Service), did the same to the breaker bar because of the odd angle I was at and positioned the 3 foot bar so it sandwiched just in front of my K&N filter and started rockin' it and it loosened with a very un-dramatic "click".

WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's it for today, gonna rest on my laurels for a few days now and start working on backing that pulley off.

I'm gonna tell you what. It was really nothing!

Like I said it was a very un-dramatic "click" when it loosened.

Having the right tools for the job makes a world of difference.

Now that I'm and "expert" at this, in retrospect, it was really nothing. I would advise to NEVER EVER trust any chrome socket for this kind of job, no matter what brand. An impact socket was the way to go.

Yeah, I'm debating that one, how much could THAT cost at the dealer, $80?????

Structurally, there's nothing wrong with the threads and the head of it is really only dinked up but I was sill able to get a good bite on it no problem.

get a new bolt. don't shoot yourself in the foot. you're going to have to take it off again some other time and it won't be as "easy" the next time.

Now I guess the next thing is to get that pulley off.

Not today. Today is booked solid.

My Sunday off is no longer like a day off anymore....Church etc... untill about 1130am, make dinner, watch football, wait for the wife to get home and the go to work for a few hours in street clothes to review the week and nit-pick everything in preparation for our weekly Monday morning review of the previous week (Quality Assurance stuff to make sure everyone is on their game all the time).

if i remember right, i was able to simply pry the pulley off with a pipe. just pry little by little, all the way around so it doesn't bind. if it doesn't work, then most auto parts stores have tools rentals where you can get a pulley removal tool. watch very carefully for the key (might be remembering incorrectly, but i'm pretty sure it has a removable key, not a built in key feature)! don't want to lose that! to put it back on, line it back up and use the NEW bolt!

If you're shopping for impact sockets, consider buying from Harbor Freight (www.harborfreight.com). A friend and I are impressed with the quality of his 1/2" drive set, especially for the price. I don't know how much shipping costs.

I've bought plenty from harbor freight in the past, but it beame an issue of wanting to be able to feel the socket and use it today. there is a store near us , but that's actually like almost 40 miles away. But, yes, like I said, given the girth of an impact socket, I would never use anything but that for this kind of job.

Dont know if this will help, but I got my crankshaft pulley bolt off today using a 12000lb tow strap and my High Lift Jack bar. I fed the tow strap through the pulley then made a figure eight between the frame rail and pulley, put the socket and wrench on, fed the High Lift bar over the wrench and it broke free. The pulley then just slid off, not sure if that is good? Anyways....hope that helps anyone else who is watching this and rebuilding.

To be honest, the last thing I did was take that bolt out. The pulley is still all tied-off. Wanted to do something today but ran out of energy. I hope mine pulls right off too.

duuuude. i for one have been patiently waiting for an update on this thread, and finally the thread title popped up in the list. i excitedly clicked on it. . . and no update. hahaha. you should get on it! if the weather in PA is anything like MI right now, you're not gonna find much better weather this time of year to work on it! it's sunny and 68* right now!

yeah but DUUUUUDE........when the wife is off on the same day I am off it equals not so many of the things on the to-do-list are close to what I WANT to be doing

Also, got my azz kicked last few days at work (E.R.) and felt totally out of gas today.

And, yeah the weather is awesome, that's why the grass is getting cut today.
