I meant alternator. Mind is getting old, but I believe the prices were what I paid a few years ago.
Antifreeze isnt cheap, I would cry too. One reason I still have water in my 86. Have a small leak I need to find before I put the good stuff in.

Here's a dude writing on this...(coolant)... Apparently the ONLY place to REALLY get the Phosphate thingymadoers in there is at the Dealers..........
"Only Japanese dealerships carry non-silicate, phosphated OAT antifreeze. Dunno why aftermarket American antifreeze makers haven't jumped on that bandwagon yet. I s'pose it's 'cuzz the Japanese produce and sell so few cars over here... (GM & Ford wish!) Unless you buy the Japanese antifreeze, that leaves DEX-COOL (and its various unlicensed clones such as the current yellow-jug Prestone) ethylene glycols with OAT and no silicates or phophates, or G-05 with OAT and reduced silicates and no phosphates. If you're brave, you can pour conventional green-snot-of-death into your all aluminum ricer and hope bi-yearly drains and refills will do the trick long term. By the way, silicates are not "bad" for aluminum, per se. They're just not stable in solution long term in high concentrations."

got the alternator out. had to pull the motor.
almost.
anyhoo...says "NAPA POWER" on it, so I thought maybe I had a chance of some sort of warranty. called the local one and the guy said without the receipt he can't help me, and there's only a 1 year warranty anyway. then quoted me a price of $136.....but it had to be delivered from Alabama.
pass.
called AUTOZONE...LIFETIME WARRANTY...will be there by noon tomorrow...$132.
I probably should learn how to rebuild one, but right now is not the time.
this is terrible timing as Joe and I have to make a trip on friday and have to use the wife's 4runner and she has to use my truck because she can't drive Joe's. so this is not gonna be a long drawn-out process.
as far as the antifreeze topic....I'm gonna get a strainer from work and maybe reuse my coolant ...not the quart or so that's on the floor though...that's donated to the floor.

all done.
got a leeetle deescount at AUTOZONE....so it didn't hurt so much.
kinda wished I had tried to rebuild like VITALY had said, but I have zero room for error since I needed it done by tomorrow.
Brandon had warned me that he needed to "modify" his alternators in the past to get them to fit...and so did I.....and the bolt didn't fit in the top....and the I hit myself across the head really hard.
anyways...it's all good.

Hmmm, I didn't have a problem with the adjustment bolt fitting. But I think it was Chef???? that had that issue too and wound up getting a NAPA alternator that didn't need grinder modification?

YEP, .... EVERY Parts store in the 'BIG 3' had that bushing crammed in there, Brandon... I ground it down to get it to fit... but then it took a dump on me(o'reilly)... So I head over to NAPA(where I THOUGHT I'd bought it, lol... )... And yep, Napa said, "Well, we'll take it and give you another, it's clearly newer".... Then, I had Napa give me one of their premium(?) ones? Not sure all Napa's are the same.. But this one I use grabbed me one with Denso Parts used for reman.... And it said that right on the sticker. Apparently they had other ones, too.

and thank goodness for air tools. not only was it VERY helpful to get the big bolt out from the bottom, it was equally helpful to force that top adjusting bolt through the alternator so that I could get the nut on it on the other side.
anyways, it works, the truck is back on the road, Joe and I are gonna be able to make our trip (Harrisburg to the FIRE EXPO) and the wife can confidently drive my truck to work 2 miles each way (she could walk it too.....and then she'd kill me)...cuz she's working at the high school tomorrow.

oh yeah...indeed. that's why I made a 2nd thread to help with the timing chain / head gasket install. all 4 wheels fell off this thread about 149 pages ago.
I have a big metal tool that I found at a yard sale for 50cents.....about 3 feel long with a spike at one end and a claw on the other hand. I've used it several times. this time the claw was right next to my head trying to get some tension on the alternator when it slipped and nailed me right in the forehead. not quite golf-ball sized lump, more like a PEANUT M&M. no curse-words were spoken.....they were all right there though...and so was Joe. so I kept it PG-13.

Hey what is that trick? I tried to skim the whole thread to see if you said already, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the brake cleaner or the valve lapping compound...

since my thread got a bump, figured I'd give an update.
still running fine. someday I'm gonna re-FIPG that pan....but for now, it's OK. I just keep a piece of cardboard under it in the garage.
alternator works like a champ.
been feeling a driveline vibration since the fall. probably a u-joint (in my opinion)..does it at pedal and accelerating but not when I'm off the pedal. been through this before and I believe it to be the same. looks like a PITA to do too. for now, it's all good. good enough for my trips back and forth to work.
did I mention I get 2mpg's better mileage since I took the knobby tires off and put my long trail t/a's back on? better ride, can hear myself think and better mpg's.
did a little spelunking at my mother's house and dug out my original stock size spare tire that I believe has never, ever been mounted. so now that's a whopping 9 tires I have stacked in the garage, plus 4 more in the basement ( for off-roading only) and a set of 16'' rims in the garage and Joe's black stock ones in the basement. holy hell, I'm a wheel and tire hoarder.
