so, i'm gonna try to not get toooooo mushy here...but here it goes.
i came to this site almost a year and a half ago, in hopes to get some info.....what i got was MUCH MUCH MORE!!!
to everyone and anyone that encouraged me, teased me, cared enough to nag at me, gave me tips, pointers, hints, pictures, advice, a swift kick in the butt or nads or shins. To everyone that read this thread and said "why is he taking so long?" and checked back anyway. to everyone who contributed in any way whatsoever to making this possible....i am forever indebted. several of you have earned a place with me that is forever held in high regard.......

of course, 1st thing i did today when i woke up was get a cup of coffee, grab my smokes and go out and start it up.....and it did start right up too......and no leaks on the driveway either...so that's got me happy too.
thanks again for the congrats guys....this has been an EPIC thread....and being that it is not titled "how to change....blah-blah-blah" it still fits the title of "...gotta start somewhere..."

a few things you guys may or may not understand, so i will post it here, again.
i am no mechanic.
i am an emergency room nurse. i / we spend about every penny we make, just like most of you. so to have the added expenditure of money and time added on top of the daily bills and daily routine, it just made for some disgusting reality checks frequently for me / us.
after all was said and done, i truly spent probably less than $400 on this all in all..... i don't think it's possible for me to tally everything up. but the fact that i had to buy some tools and paint and this and that added to the $200 from engnbldr for the "top end" rebuild kit....as well as some odds and ends parts i had to buy.
for anyone that has stuck through this thread or actually read it from start to now, you could certainly see my frustration / hesitation and repeated questioning of whether or not i ever should have thought i could actually do this.
what may seem like an easy repair to most, was far more than that to me. it was learning how stuff works, why stuff works this way or that way and the satisfaction and pride of knowing that with the exception of right there at the end with XXXTREME22R helping me, nobody's hands but mine and sometimes my son Joe, had touched this engine.
once again, i say thank-you to anyone who helped in any which way.

I read it all, looked at all the pictures and cheered wildly when it ran (good thing I live alone). Actually had a tear watching the vids.

well, as far as i'm concerned, it ain't over....like i said this was the "gotta start somewhere" thread......and i started with doing this repair. but there's stuff still to do.....the "need to do", "want to do", and "would be nice to do" lists still exist in my head.
and on a side note:
My a/c works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hasn't in about 7 years....woooooohoooooo!!!
and....my radio works.....same thing....hasn't worked right in years......
my son wanted me to give him a ride to school today in it, so i did, logging a little over 4 more miles on it....ran nice and smooth.
today's list to do on it is quite short....change the oil (i checked it, still clear yellow) and drain the water from the cooling system (still has oil mixed in it)......maybe a wash and some booty fab to tie up the sway-bar until i pull the front wheels off to cut off the links....whether or not i need the swaybar is still up in the air as far as if i need it in Pennsylvania for inspection....which conveniently expired the end of April.

might just pretty-up the caddy and get her ready to put in the front yard......i need to sell it to get some $$$$.....otherwise the $40 / month i pay to insure it doesn't kill us that much......not as much as paying insurance on 2 non-running vehicles was....now down to one....problem was , if i cancelled the insurance i would have had to surrender the plates, and i could NEVER do that with MY plate.
in reality, i would love to get another 22re and put it on an engine stand and do it up and swap it into the 88 4runner......i know everyone likes the 3.4 swap, but i'm a more non-conventional kinda guy and like doing things MY way......hehehe

A 3.0 to 22re swap...Nice!!! I hope you put a cam in that one and get rid of the slushbox while your at it! Dual t-cases and twin stick.
