92 Pickup Seal Between Transmission And Transfer Case
Hey everyone I heard gear whine on the interstate in 2 wheel drive with the hubs unlocked a couple days ago so I pulled off and checked the transmission fluid level. Turned out it was two and a half quarts low. Transmission case was HOT. So hot I thought I could smell burning oil. So I added fluid, said a few dozen prayers that I hadn't torn anything up and got back on the road. I looked but couldn't find where it leaked out. I still had some gear whine when I got back on the interstate but I figured there was nothing I could do about it. I'm gonna add STP to it once I change the seal and pray that quiets it but back on topic. Last night I pulled the fill plug on my transfer case to check it's level as well. It was about 2 quarts overfull. So I think it's fairly safe to assume the seal between the two has gone out. My question is has anyone had to change this seal before? What is it called so I can buy a new one and how hard is it to change. How hard is it to separate the trans and transfer case. Honestly any advice would be appreciated here.
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

You can remove the transfer case with the tranny still in the truck.
Naturally, both the front and rear driveshafts will have to be disconnected.
You'll have to support the tranny while the crossmember and t-case are removed.
The seal is just pressed into the rear of the transmission case.

No, it is called the: "SEAL, OIL (FOR TRANSFER ADAPTER)" Toyota part number 90311-32009
I picked this number out of my 1987 4Runner list, and i believe that seal is the same for all 21 spline R1-A t-case applications, but you can verify
for your specific model here:::: Toyota parts catalog (epc-data.com)
How long it takes depends on your workspace, tools, and experience. You and a helper ought to be able to do it in a day.

So far, we don't know Fox's transmission or transfer case. (Probably a RF1A https://core-shifters.com/pages/toyo...identification ) Might even be an automatic, for all we know. ("transmission fluid")
The transmission and transfer case are identified on a sticker on the driver's side door pillar. Always start there.
