91 Runner Instrument Cluster Racket
Hey guys, first post here on this site.
excited to hopefully get some answers..
91 4Runner 3.0 4x4 5speed 186k.
as the weather is getting colder here in Oregon I have started to notice that my instrument cluster makes a lot of racket until the truck warms up while driving. The needle also bounces up and down quite heavily on the MPH cluster. 10-20 Mph difference
This is the first winter I have had the truck..
Didn’t know if it was an easy fix or a complicated electrical nightmare.
Just trying to figure out What it could be, and how I can get it handled.

Mine does this as well, cable driven speedo.
It's irritating for sure. I've heard of people taking the cluster loose and oiling it. I think something like 3 in 1 would work. Really light weight oil that creeps well. Air tool oil may work as well.

Need a plastic safe lubricant for the cluster, or at least something not to "detergent". Think the factory stuff for speedometer and odometer is a white lithium. You don't want it to melt at " cabin" temperature or it will migrate.
Should be the same stuff on that guage regardless of cable or electromechanical.
Look under the right side near the tail shaft housing, there will either be a cable or a wire harness.

I was referring to lubricating the cable itself, allowing it to run between the cable and sleeve.
as for the cluster itself, i would not want something that would run into the electronics.
