91' Ody RV Taking off in 2nd

91' Ody RV Taking off in 2nd
Hey ya'll, just purchased a 91' Ody RV- has the v6 3.0, and R150 transmission. No matter how hard you floor it, it will only take off in 2nd when in D. It does, however, engage 1st when I bypass to L. This seems to be the only way to get into first- ECT PW button won't do it either.
Here's the kicker- I'm getting codes 62 and 64; the exact same codes that were thrown in 2011 from the first owner. On this service sheet (see attachment if curious), they report the same issue, and did all sorts of work (some of it hard to read) but from what I can make out here's what they did:
-Remove and install trans torque converter
-bench overhaul trans w/ valve body solenoids
-flush trans and clear codes
-road test, check for cods (ok) .... (lol but did it take off in 1st after all or no??)
So as far as I can tell, this baby has always taken off in 2nd, and even with the solenoids replaced it's decided to throw the same codes years later. Are these solenoids known to go out? It'd be really surprising to me since there's under a 10k difference in mileage from when this work was done and where it's at now (57,500 to 65,000 now), but it did sit for some time.
I know some automatic transmissions are designed to to take off in second- does anyone know if the R150 is one of those? It wouldn't make much sense to me with it being such a big rig, but maybe just the normal trucks did this in 91' and they didn't modify it to take off in 1st for the RVs? If this is the case, is there a way to modify the transmission so that it will start in 1st when in D?
I've only done a few things so far- I've replaced the battery (it was bad and thought it might be messing with the computer, but the O/D light still flashes after driving for a bit), and tightened up the throttle cable (it was super loose, this helped a little with response, but of course still no 1st). I read somewhere that the throttle sensor could mess with shifting? I was thinking about doing this next sense its cheap and easy. I'm also going to flush the transmission soon to see if that would solve it. Probably should anyway with it sitting so long? I'm sort of holding off to go further, for maybe this is just how it's suppose to shift in D, and all of the other gears shift fine which makes me further think this may be the case.
I appreciate any wisdom on this- I'm new to the forum and am also a very novice mechanic. Lots of helpful info here so far. Thanks everyone.

I don't have much insight into your issue but if you have an automatic trans it is most likely of the A340 variety, specifically the A340H that came paired with the 3VZ in that era. The R series trans (R150, R150F, etc) are the 5 speed manual transmission variants.
Best of luck!

The transmission model is stamped on the door vin tag. It should be a A340E. The H variant is 4wd with hydro transfer case.
Found this online manual for the 340e and 340h
Toyota A340E and A340H

Actually, you're probably starting in 3d, not 2d. How do I know? Because your transmission told me.
The transmission is giving codes 62 and 64. It's telling me (and you) as plainly as it can that it thinks it has "Severed No. 1 solenoid [or lock up solenoid] or short circuit– severed wire harness or short circuit" http://web.archive.org/web/201408160...17diagnosi.pdf You just have to listen.
Note that this could be a "bad" solenoid, but not necessarily. While you're under the truck, you need to ohm out the wiring too. As Rad4Runner will never fail to mention, the components are near-bullet proof, but the wiring only lasts so many years.
Good luck!

scope103, thanks for the insight- I'll be sure to check the wires and keep you all posted. I'd be extremely surprised if it was a solenoid with them all being replaced. I was also going to check the trans throttle valve. I've heard this can cause take off issues?
