89' Toyota PU, start then stalls
Well, I bought a 89' Toyota PU, 22RE, 4x4, 5-speed.......I've had it for a while now and have had no problems. But about a month ago it was revving kinda high @ idle(about 1500 to 2000rpms), 2000 at the highest when it was cold. So I thought maybe the AFS was dirty so removed it and cleaned it. When I put it back on the truck wouldn't stay running. Here is what it does.....I start it it runs smoothly and stays running for about 5-10 seconds then its like a magic ghost inside shuts the key off. I have no clue what this could be, I'm not a toyota mechanic. But, I know my way around a vehicle well so I can replace the parts if needed. So if anyone could help that would be great..........

When the truck wouldn't stay running I thought maybe it was not getting enough spark or whatever. I replaced, the plugs, cap, rotor, wires, and air filter. It still does the same thing.

Well if you cleaned the mas air flow sensor and the prob got worse then you must have done something while you were cleaning it.
did you hook up all the hoses correctly ....maybe an intake leek.....?

And isn't it true that if the AFS was bad, that I can unplug it and it should stay running? Cause we tried that and it doesn't work either...........

Yes, you should be able to unplug the airflow meter and it will run, but not right away. You have to allow some time for the ECM to go into default mode. But, how did you clean the VAM? Did you take it apart at all?
Changing the plugs, cap, and rotor won't get you spark if you're not getting it. Rather, it's not the source for spark. Since you say it will atleast run briefly, then you must be getting spark. You may have a fuel delivery problem. You'll need to test the fuel pump relay and pump. But, what from you're describing, it sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere. It's possible the connection at the airflow meter is bad, even though it appears to be solid. The terminals in the connector can back out of the retainer in the clip and not connect solidly. Look in the connector from either end (connection side and the back at the rubber boot) and see if one or more is loose. If not, then start looking at other problems with fuel delivery.

I took the metal part off the plastic airbox and looked inside to make sure the little nipple hanging down wasn't, broken or dirty. Then I put it back on........and would the truck continue to start everytime and stall after a 5-10 seconds if the fuel wasn't getting to the motor. The reason I say this, is because the truck would start a 100 times and run like that, and has never not started.

a quick way to check if it's a fuel delivery problem is wait till it starts to stall and start hosing the intake down with quickstart (ether in a can). if it still runs (albeit badly) then you know you're missing fuel. if it still dies, it might be spark.

Sounds like a classic air leak down stream of the air flow sensor. You probably cracked one of the 20 year old rubber hoses when you had it apart.
Have someone stand there when you're starting it and see if they can hear the air leak. Or just start wrapping the intake tube with plastic bags, that will usually seal everything off good enough to run.
