89 Runner I picked up today, idles weird & missing [video]
just trying to diagnose this 4runner I just picked up, I drove it home 50+ miles and it ran great until I got around 60mph and above then it starts missing and buckling. Does the samething @ idle barely wants to idle and pops through the intake every now and then.
Checked the plug wires they are good, but I ran the codes and got a 51 & 52. So i disconnected the knock sensor plug under the throttle body and cleaned it real good with sensor cleaner and q-tips plugged it back up, cleared the codes and started her up. The check engine light went off and hasn't returned but I know there is something wrong because it runs extremely rich and still has trouble idling below 1,000.
I'm thinking it's still the knock sensor even though the check light hasn't returned? or maybe even tps would cause these symptoms?
I really want to get this thing on the road so I can smog & register it so any input would be great.

Eff it, I just went ahead and ordered a knock sensor and pigtail since the ECM is definitely telling me that there is a problem with the KS or pigtail. Since I can't be bothered with taking the whole top of the motor apart to replace the old one I'm just going to mount the new one on the lift hook temporarily as I've seen in another thread. I'll post my results here one I get everything done this weekend....

Ok well i got the knock sensor and pigtail on and good news is the code 51 & 52 is gone.
Bad news is the truck still won't idle for crap it's super rich, and stumbles/pops through the intake every couple of seconds. When you give it throttle it revs up fine and has plenty of power but it will die on you soon as it comes to a stop @ idle.
Any suggestions? I did test my TPS and everything seemed within spec.

intake leak in an area where you can't pinpoint. Use a propane torch to get up under there and see if you have a leak. Maybe a vac line (i am sure you checked that already.) I recently took off my throttle body to adjust the TPS and I couldn't believe how much crud was in there. I cleaned it every which way to sunday and adjusted the TPS via 4crawlers link and mine is code free and idles great.
I would take off the EGR temp sensor and clean that and see what happens.

Just thought I'd update this thread in case someone else comes looking. Got it fixed, turned out to be a stupid vac leak. The intake tubing had some hairline cracks that were hard to see, bought some plumbing from lowes and made up a new one and it idles great now. Still hiccups(light pops) every once and a while through intake so I'm going to dig around somemore then I just have to make nipple for the EGR hose /PCV hose and I think she'll be ready for smog.
Update: the pops were still there because the upper intake manifold gasket was blown too, so I pulled and all nighter and fixed it. runs perfect now
