89-95 4runners with a 22re
I have seen a few looking around the boards. But I have NEVER seen one in my area for sale. Are they rare? I would love to get my hands on one!

well they aren't super rare but compared to a v6 one yep. i see about 7 v6 4runners to every 1 22re 4runner from 90 to 95. they weren't as desirable because it was under powered and 4runners are heavy. up were i lived i know of a couple 4sale and i want one lol there is a 90 2door 22re 5sp up here i have seen. if you come across one i would pick it up but auto will be very slow so i would try and get a 5spd or just swap a 5spd

I was very lucky when my '95 came for sale when it did. 22re FTW! I practically stole it from the guy too!
but yes, they are pretty uncommon, at least at being for sale
Also, 2nd gens are '90-95. '89 was still 1st gen for 4runners, and the 22re was more common.

I wouldn't say rare, but I would say, most desirable is the 22re sr5 package, 4x4, first gens, then second gens. Generally they sell for more than they should , price wise; but people get
the money they ask for. the 22re enging has no power whatsoever, but they can run long and hard at high rev, and actually between 3000 and 3500 , run usually really smooth, like you are in it's ' sleep ' band...
I actually would love to know if anyone ever dropped in an old Ford straight 6 4.9l, with a 5 speed tranny? Love that engine; behind the 22re, proly the most reliable, and yet fuel efficient engine , with some size and power, ever made.
