check to see if you are getting spark at the plugs. if not then go back from there to coil, igniter etc..
if you are getting spark, check for fuel. can you smell it? (its probably not that though, like you said you just drove it)
if its getting spark and gas, then the only other thing is air. i would check the connections on the mass air flow and other sensors. they might cause the computer to not allow it to start if they dont get the proper signal. these connections are twenty plus years old and dry rotted and hard. if you tap one the wrong way it may cause it to loose connection.
is the starter "sticking" in the engaged position. or what? can you be more descriptive of exactly what is happening when you say sticking

ok i finally found out what it is!!!!! The fuel pump relay. i replaced it and it starts right up. put a bulb in the check engine light and drove it about 20 miles and it came on. I know that it doesnt have a cat, could that be why the check engine light is on? how do you check the codes on these trucks?

I cant figure out how to post them. but it is a 89 extended cab 4x4, 22re, original black paint that almost look brand new. im the 2nd owner, got it from macon, 248k on body and 60k on rebuilt motor and clutch. the only thing it needs is a rear bumper, the old guy i got it from always hit his boat trailer on the bumper trying to hook up to it.
