89 22re cam chain question

Well I am putting the motor back together after a head gasket replacement and I am wondering how the cam sprocket goes back on the cam with the chain being so tight? I am pretty sure the tensioner has fully extended and I need to know how to retract it so that I can bolt on the sprocket. thanks

You can either pull the timing cover and compress the tensioner....

I made the mistake and didn't put the bolt into the cam gear to hold it in place.

Using my LONG screw driver, I was able to push my tensioner over enough to put the gear back onto the cam shaft.

It is about 3/4 of the way down the front. Just above the oil pump on the passenger side.

Or, you could crank the cam forward a hair, get the chain on and then crank it back to get it realigned resulting in more tension on the driver's side, which is what you want.
