yes.. and behind there, i see no snap rings just 2 notches and some holes lol.

i think it might need to be pressed/tapped with hammer.

im gonna go take a couple pics, and try to get it to budge.

OK. Because the more I look at the '93 FSM, the more I get the impression that they don't come apart. They never show them seperated and don't describe a procedure for it. Obviously it has to have some sort of seal/bearing there in order to move. I betting on press out or "replacement" of entire part. Of course it's all a big fat guess on my part as I've actually been in one of these.

In my case, I've decided to switch mine to the newer style like you guys have. Sonoran Steel will modify my steering shaft to fit. I've got a line on a used '94 box w/ 135k. That plus the mod work will still be cheaper than a new/reman box. After reading the whole spiel on a rebuild, I decided I don't want to try it until I have lots of time and room for error available for the experiment.

steering box beatdown

ok so after a closer look i determined that it threads in and is not pressed in. there are 4 lil holes that look like they were made for spanner wrench to take it apart.




these pics show what not to use to do the job, and why not!
(i got lucky and it went back together ok)



and out comes the worm gear




underneath that, was a bearing and then the stupid seal



a 3/4 socket and a hammer worked great for removing them.






the new seal next to the old one along with the part number, (i got it from napa)

i got the worm gear back in its housing. now i just have to get thees

that adjuster nut thingy was a pita to get out and put back in with just a caveman attitude and a chisel. if i had the correct tool for the job it would have been cake.

Nice! Good info to have available. Have fun with those recirculating balls. I don't envy you on that task.

phew, I'm glad I just replaced the whole box, lol

but this gives me an idea of what to look forward to when the time comes to rebuild thise old one I've got

what's with the balls? what are the purpose of those? lol, look's like a PITA...

Wow Toyota 1 you are my HERO!!! I sure appreciate you sharing that with us! One of those required SSTs huh... I'm going to see if our shop at work has something that might fit the bill... Any body have an idea on what to use for a more proper tool?

haha.. that link you posted gives an idea of how it goes back together. if i would have red the fsm before i attempted to take apart the steering box, those bearings would have not fell out lol.. oh well they needed a cleaning anyway

there bearings, there called recirculating balls. they ride between the worm gear and the power control valve.

np, 2 spanner wrenches to fit those 4 holes would be ideal. the fsm doesn't even say anything about that seal let alone on how to get it out. im assuming they just want you to buy a new power control valve assembly. and make sure you mark it before you unscrew it, that way you can put the bearing preload back the way it was.

well to replace that seal they have to come out. what i meant was if i had read the fsm in advance they would have fell onto a nice clean paper towel, instead of all over the ground.

You know I pulled that out and I didn't have any balls fall out, what gives? I'll have to get it back out and look at it again...

thats probably because the balls stayed in the power control valve, mine did to until i flipped the steering box over to dump out some of the atf that was still in there.

i just put the balls back in the grooves inside the power control valve. i used wheel bearing grease to make the balls in place while i carefully screwed the worm gear back in. the box is back together and feels fine. though i have yet to put it back in the truck(waiting on steering box bracket so i can move the box forward). sorry no pics though. im sure ill do it again in the future to somebody junk, if i do i might do a wright up.
