88 Toyota pickup - "pull and turn" brake handle

Is there any such thing as an aftermarket replacement for these handles? The oem is made of soft rubbery plastic. It's 30 yrs old and starting to dissolve. Grimed up with skin oils and dirt. It's like a spongy turd. I'd like to have something a bit nicer, like chrome, or a better grade of plastic. Got any ideas?

that's a good question... i wonder if a handle could be fabbed up out of metal or wood, or 3d-printing.

i'd like to dump it entirely, in favor of a lift and button-lock on the tunnel, like my '97 miata has, and the old air-cooled vw's i used to own.

I am hoping someone has come up with a way to repurpose one of those hokey chrome pistol grip shifter handles that were popular in the 80s.

Custom Gunstock handle would also be cool.

I got one out of a wrecking yard that was in great shape, so I don't necessarily think they all fall part due to age. Getting a used one in good shape should be possible.

the ˟˟˟˟ty part about them is they come fully assembled with the cables in them and then a pin pressed to never let them come apart in pieces, i have three or four of them in the shop they are just a cable and a stopper mounted in a solid rod inside a tube. the cable is attached to the rod with a stopper then fed thru the tube and a pin is pressed in so that they only rotate 90 degrees to indicated engaged or not basically

Giving up this one

When my oem shift knob became gummy and disgusting, I bought a nice one in faux leather and chrome. Same with the steering wheel. I love the change. Was hoping for something the same with the parking brake, but I can see that it would take a machinist to pull off.

I cleaned the handle. It's about as good as any used ones. And that's that.

Thanks for your patience and responses.

How crazy do you want to get?
1963 and 64-66 Corvette used a similar pull and turn system.

That Corvette item is exactly what I would have been looking for but I am unclear on what it would take to adapt it to my truck. Apparently from what I am reading on this forum the toyota handle isn't meant to be replaceable. Am I right?

Seems not like a Toyota thing to do!
But no doubt it would take some fabrication skills to adapt the vette handle.

Just remembered early Mustangs used a similar style…but Ford, yuck…

Good choice, I just changed my parking brake cable and it’s a pretty intricate assembly, too bad the handle wasn’t something that just screwed off but I would imagine since it’s a pull and turn that’s the reason it’s not….
