87 pickup fuel problem

hey guys first post. i have limited time on the computer and have had a hard time tracking down my issue., i recently bought an 87 pickup 22r. it sat for 6+ years before i got it, i changed the oil and made sure the engine was free before attempting to start it. when i shot it with starting fluid and it will fire but wont keep running. i dont believe im getting fuel. i unhooked each line coming from the top of the fuel tank and im not getting fuel out of any. im not sure where the fuel pump is on this truck or if its electrical or mechanical. i dont have much experience on carbed engines. does it have an intank sending unit? any and all help would be appreciated as i havent had as much time as i would like to go through all the forums. thanks, justin

22r is a mechanical pump it's located on the front right hand side of the cylinder head. There is a sight gauge on the 22r carb' (IIRC). If it sat for awhile it's likely time to clean/rebuild it.

You'll want to pick up a manual or two

The fuel filter sits near the top of the fuel tank on a 22r. There is a filter actually in the tank as well. I was reading on a Chevy restore site recently and they was saying that when gas is that old and you try and just add more fresh fuel to it, that the old fuel actually turns into an abrasive when burning. I cant say for sure, but draing the tank wouldnt hurt any way and might save your carbrator.

Depending on which part of the country you live in, humidity is an issue that can cause rust to build up in the tank. If your tank is rusty, on my 88 Runner build below on the first page, I show how I clean and restore a tank.

Here is the intank filter.
Part number for a new intank filter is #77023-12050. On ebay it is called a TOYOTA FACTORY NIB FUEL FILTER SUCTION TUBE DIESEL. It was selling for $4.50 when I finally found it. I paid $15 at Toyota.

Well the lines are completly plugged in the tank, took the would be sending unit (if it had a motor) off and lines were solid, Tank is full of rust, How cleanable are these tanks once rusted? And what is the part called that I took off, I look for sending units but they are All motorized or it pulls up the fuel level sensor, any help would be great!

Mechanical pumps rairly go bad, I would suggest cleaning the tank and replacing the fuel filter. Once you have fresh fuel in the tank you will need to take the line coming from the tank into the left plug on the fuel pump and blow compresssed air into the tank, once you here it bubble stop and replace the line quickly take the gas cap off to release the pressure, this will prime the system so it will start.

Ok, we'll I've done that and replaced the pump but the lines that are directly in the tank are clogged with rust, Do you know where I can find that whole unit that bolts to the top of the tank? And what's the specific name of the part?
