i think auto hubs disengage when you go backwords
so, no 4 wheel drive in reverse

Its strange the seller took pix of the engine with the air tube off, because the truck wont even start like that... I looked at a first gen once where the seller was saying it had been rebulit, but the reality was it NEEDED to be rebuilt! LOL

Manual hubs are generally very reliable, and they work in forward AND reverse.
Auto hubs have a reputation to be less reliable, and since they engage in Forward and disengage in Reverse, you only get 4wd when going forward.
Manual AISIN hubs are the only way to go... That is a pretty truck, but for my money, its a 5 speed 22re vehicle.... avoiding V6 3.0.

What I'm not sure your understanding is that you don't need to lock the hubs everytime you wanna go into 4WD. You can leave the hubs locked as long as you want. I heard a few people on here who have never unlocked there hubs since they got their truck. And others who just lock them at the first sign of snow and leave it there till winter is over. The main pro with manuel hubs is as soon as you put it in 4WD, you have 4WD. With Auto hubs the vehicle has to move a few feet(as I understand it anyway) Before it'll engage. Witch is the same reason it'll disengage in reverse. Even thought if you keep backing up it will go back into 4. Manuel hubs, it won't disengage.

oh, thats cool. it wont hurt anything to never unlock the hubs? even highway driving at 60 - 70 mph ish?

leave em unlocked driving on the road, unless you need 4wd on the road.

when you get to the dirt road, lock em in , and youll be able to shift to 4wd when you need to.

If you leave them locked your gas mileage will decrease, the truck will sound louder, and the drive train will wear a little faster. You're supposed to drive with them engaged for at least 16 miles every month to keep them properly lubricated, as the owners manual reads. You'll be fine driving 70 with them locked, in or out of 4x4, but don't drive on dry pavement with 4x4 engaged. I haven't unlocked my hubs since early September because there is ice and snow on the roads now and I've needed 4x4 often when stopping was not an option.

I take my first post back after reviewing the pictures the other guys pointed out. $2700 is a little high.

I drive with the hubs locked all the time. I only notice maybe 1 or 2mpg difference.

Yeah, thats about what I see. Its really not very much, but some people are anal about their MPG.

if my CV boots weren't shot, I'd probably drive around with mine locked in most of the time too

but really, why have manual hubs with the ability to unlock them if you're just going to leave them locked in all the time; just get some ADD flanges and swap em out...
