I now have the recommended accel 140008 coil installed instead of the stock coil. And I'm using this ignition control module: https://www.amazon.com/Standard-Moto.../dp/B004BTQAKA

My truck now performs much better than it did with the stock coil and the mysterious 1/4 watt 1k ohm resistor that all of the internet threads directed to install. However, the truck still does not perform perfectly reliable.

Every few days the truck will instantly and completely lose spark while I'm driving. However, all I have to do to solve it is turn the ignition off and then back on. I can quickly flip the key backwards and then forwards while driving and keep right on going. This conversion seemed to be popular from the amount of threads I found on various message boards so I went for it. But why has it made my truck unreliable? Why would my ignition system function perfectly more than 95% of the time but periodically fail? Would could I possibly have done wrong to get these kind of results? I'm unfortunately near the point of declaring that this GM ignition conversion is a bad choice and not a healthy thing to do to your old Toyota. I'd love if someone could convince me that the GM conversion works and is reliable.

I recall reading a thread where someone was having this issue and I think that they said they solved the problem by adding a relay to provide power to the new setup. Using a relay to provide power from the battery can reduce the voltage drop. I also think the Wells module that you posted may be a better module for this mod. Keep us posted on your results. We may yet make it the point where this becomes a practical and reliable mod for those of us with a 22R.

I appreciate the response. I've been surprised at the lack of responses here. I was under the impression that a lot of people had done this mod but maybe I was wrong.

What exactly do you mean by adding a relay to provide power? Do you mean simply having a 12v power line directly from the battery to the module?

I'll try that wells module but the one I've got ought to work unless there is something about these units that I don't know. They are all basically the same to my knowledge.

I'm using the exact some module as this guy:

He says it works great.

It's one of the cheapest modules out there at $19 on amazon.com

If you go back to post #12 in this thread, there is a link to a six page thread on another forum. Check out page # four in that thread in particular. The hot wire goes to the positive post on the Accel coil and the B terminal on the ignition module. I have not done this mod yet, but I'm assuming this wire is hot when the ignition is on... You can correct me if I'm wrong about this. What I was suggesting is the same as using a Hotshot relay in the starter circuit...in fact you could do exactly that in this circuit, you would be using it to send a fused 12 volts to the positive coil post( and from there to the B terminal). Here is an example of a similar situation with an electric fuel pump, by using a relay and thicker wiring you can reduce your voltage drop and improve performance.http://www.3800performance.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=CASPERS-FPH

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/ign...skates.802849/ Here is a link to a thread that has a lot of good technical information. Post #4 has a link to amazon for thermal compound. Post #18 explains why using a relay is helpful. Also there is some discussion about premium ignition modules.
