86 dome light ??
Dome light never did come on when opening either door.I sandpapered the contact points in the housing and the light comes on when using the lever(on both sides)?Juice at all points in the housing.Still no light when doors open.Removed the drivers side kick panel and the red wire with plug is connected to the plug on door switch.Opened the white plug and turned the key to accessories and used a test light on the engine side plug,no juice.Never have had a headlight buzzer, but the key buzzer works.Where is the relay that people write about?Any other thoughts?....and yes the dome light cover fell apart when I removed it,ha,ha.I'm surely not a electrician or even mechanical.

On an 88 the domelight goes thru the buzzer under the dash and above the steering column. You can look on my first post on my 88 build and see what I am talking about there. Some trucks are differnt. I dont know if 86 is the same as 88 or not.
I have an 86 and noticed today the domelight isnt working. I am missing a door switch that turns the light on so I havent looked into it just yet. I will get it replaced and see from there what happens.
When I do get to the light issue on mine I will post it on my 86 build, if you want to check it out later on. It could be awhile before I get to it though.

Here is a link to my 88 thread on #191. On an 88 the light circuit runs through a 3 inch (approximate) square box. Alot of times people will disconnect the box to stop the door buzzer from ringing. It isnt designed this way on all trucks.

It is located under the dash, it is just to the right side of the steering column. Make sure it is plugged up good and tight. You can lower the buzzer by seperating the litttle tab or just make the gap big enough for it not to make contact.

The last 5 digits on the black box is 89102 the same as my 88. Mine just wasnt hooked up and needed a light bulb to get the light working. Still havent found a drivers side door switch. Box is above brake pedal.
Check by the fuse panel in the drivers side kick panel and coiming down the window post, there are 2 black wires with a square plug and see if it is plugged in.

On my '87, with the buzzer-box removed the dome light won't come on with the left door, but it will still come on when the right door is opened. I actually prefer things this way so I can be stealthy when opening the driver's door. One man's bug is another man's feature.

I've got a few bare wire harnesses hanging around the dash area, and I was wondering if someone here knew the wire colors for the relay? Oh, and terry, if you want it, I have an extra door switch layin around from a truck I salvaged.

Thanks warmonger..I actually found my spare and put a bulb in it and got it working. Appreciate it. I will try and get a pic of it later to day for you. Just the ones that attach to the box?

Terrys87,managed to contort my 65 year old body under the steering wheel and peek above the brake pedal.I saw a little black box,so I assume that's the headlight buzzer relay.Guess if I remove the lower dash cowling I'd have more access and could actually see something?Perhaps I can find a younger acrobat to check everything out.

Your welcome lectric80. If you want the light and not the buzzer, I just bedn the tab away from the little coil in the box. You gett the best of both worlds.
mildave...I am sure that would help. I kneel on the ground and with a little bending am able to get to it fairly well. may depend on how high your truck sets though. I had to be to work early and got home late. Will see how much it would help removing the cover tomorrow.

Terrys87,didn't yank on the black box after locating it the other day.Is it free floating with plug and wires or screwed onto something.Should I just pull it downward to access it?

It should slide straight over to the passenger side. It has a piece of metal that the tabs on the box slide on to.
The tab I am refering to is int the above pic by my thumb. I just slides and on to the metal tab.
