The last proper restoration I saw was done here a few years back by @Charles4x4 and he ended up keeping that one for himself. He probably had at least 25k in that one and probably wouldn’t have seen that returned at auction. The ones that pop up these days seem to be lipstick on a pig being flipped for remarkable money. I hope the person that bought this last one realizes what they just spent 25k on.

Well i would sell mine in a hot second for $25k but for two reasons
1) I don’t need the money.
2) my 16 year old son would never forgive me.
You guys are being too negative on that truck. Even considering the truth bomb that Wally dropped on them(which i think was in poor taste, by the way) 4 bidders liked it above $18k5 and 3 liked it above $20k.
And as to the point about the buyer realizing what he bought,
1) this is America, babe. You can spend your $25k on whatever you want. Who knows? Maybe he just made millions off Bitcoin.
2) some people have more money than brains. My new neighbor paid $100k over the asking price of the house “just to make sure he got it”! See #1.
3) the truck was well-represented by the seller and even an independent body shop said the bodywork looked well done.
Yes we are all very familiar with these trucks and can pick them apart. What did the buyer really get? The fact is it was an eye-catching truck, relatively low mileage, unique on the road and increasing in value. It’s a hobby/special interest vehicle. I hope he has a family and a dog and they all enjoy the truck very much. If he did overpay market pricing by $10k who cares? Some people spend that annually on bar tabs, sports season tickets, vacations, other motorized depreciating toys. Again, see#1.
These same arguments can be made -buyer overpaid vs. what’s it worth to you?- no matter the type of collectible/hobby/special interest car.

For me, I watch way too many Barrett Jacksons and Mecums, where you could play a drinking game to “original, original, original”. I know exactly where my eyes are going as soon as one of these comes up. This one was represented well as far as the photos go and again, kudos to the seller for that. At the end of the day, as long as both parties are satisfied, nothing else matters.

i grew up in the passenger seat of that car(my Dad’s) and certainly know a lot more about it than was disclosed by seller or auction house to the point that the buyer might not be as pleased if he knew what i know about it. But as you say, “as long as both parties are satisfied”.

That must have been an exciting moment for you. I could only imagine. All old cars have a story to tell, whether you want to hear it or not. Nobody can tell it better than the first owner. It’s only original once.
For what it’s worth, this seller wasn’t trying to dupe anybody. Hell, he probably didn’t know its history either since he bought it in this updated condition. And the new owner should enjoy it for what it is.
Hopefully they’ll be another example up soon to talk about.

poor taste? yeah, sorry, i’m a fiscal conservative and social moderate, not a socialist. that 4runner has rust history, and ZERO documentation of the repair. could be bondo. i have no second thoughts about putting the info out there; i don’t care whether he needed the money for a ˟˟˟˟ing organ transplant, that rig is a turd unless documented otherwise.

yeah, that’s pretty funny because no one who knows me would ever call me a snowflake. I’ll refrain from name calling. You get my point.

Someone once said
" it's worth what somebody is willing to pay for it.
Buyers must do their due diligence and sellers should be honest about what they are selling, but...
what i consider clean, nice, and valuable.
someone else might consider junk.
" one man's trash is another man's treasure"

The market decides the price, no doubt about that, but it's good to know the vehicle history, as much as info as possible, even more in a BAT listing, that is the reason of the comment section in every auction, people comments and sellers answer/give additional info, making the process more transparent. That could be a problem for dishonest sellers only.

Interesting back and forths.
Probably totally off topic: I wonder if all these Moon prices have anything to do with 9T$ printed in last few years...
Hope things stay crazy thru summer until I can sell my house. Melrose, you spoke about house prices; in N CO just in 15 and 16 folks were bidding over asking.
Actually I think that still happens, but not to that degree.
A crew supervisor I knew bid up 100k over asking (which I thought was ridiculous enough). Houses weren't on market for a day.
So by the time I finish my 95, it should be bringing a bitcoin or two! lol (not that I'd sell)

I’m not sure what drives these prices. It could be the cost of new models lifting up the value, but on 30+ year old vehicles that seems a stretch. My wife sold her 1987 FJ60 in 2001 for more than what it cost new. I thought that was crazy, especially considering I was never much of a FJ fan. But new model landcruisers at the time were very expensive and scarce.

What is driving the prices is old broncos, blazers, FJs, our 1st gen 4runners are one of the last REMOVABLE top off road vehicles that are even close to affordable.

I thought the same thing, because the 84-88 trucks are not reaching these high prices (except the BTTF ones).

I dont follow prices as closely as most of you but I agree with the above posts as far as SUVs going for more than trucks across manufacturers.
the other obvious factor is the dissatisfaction with contemporary vehicles with lots of electronic sensors, plastic body panels, etc.
the oldschool 80s vehicles are the last of a dying breed at least for a while
