- I’ll go as far as to say fairly sure. TMS (Toyota USA) tended to load up the SR5 with accessories over the STD and DX. Sometimes the DX got a upgrade package that allowed it to come with some accessories that were stock on the SR5, but those kit were pretty superficial. Whatever could be easily done at the port. My guess is Toyota tried to keep the price down on a bulk of the trucks to lower the tariff fees they’d get hit with once the arrived at the US. Back then Toyota’s big inroad with the truck market was a great 4 cyl that was cheap as hell. So back in the 1980’s carpet was pretty much exclusive to the SR5. The 1989 4Runner was kind of a bridge between first gen and second gen, and you were starting to see some of the guidelines in build shift, but with 100% vinyl door panels, and the vinyl in the bed, I’m pretty certain of this one.
- If the vehicle was sent from Japan to a private distributer like South East, Gulf States, and I think Boston or Chicago back then, it’s possible they added something the other distributers(who were by then owned by TMS) didn’t.
- Toyota didn’t tend to mix carpet and vinyl in the same vehicle. All one or the other. But as many here can testify too, what a distributer like SouthEast would do was sky’s the limit. I saw a Landau top on a Camry once.
- EPC data is pretty darn accurate, and the info looks almost exactly like the microfiche we used back then. You can grab your model number and look up the flooring on your vehicle and see how Japan built and shipped it.

My apologies. The truck had STD, DLX, SR5/SRT. I think 4Runners were only DLX and SR5/SRT. There were some pretty stripped down 4Runner DLX’s though.
The plate on the firewall has your model#. That’ll tell you what you have. Useful to have when looking up parts, too.

To the best of my memory:
RN61LV R=R series engine, N=Truck, 6=4wd, I believe the "1" is the gen within the series. "0" would be 84-85."1" 86-89. L=left side steering wheel, V=Wagon.
MDEA M=manual trans, D=Deluxe, E=EFI, A=America(Built for USA spec, not where it was built)
Options
5F=5 speed mtm
W=Wagon
St= I'd assume power steering. But I forget
USA=built for USA market (emissions, safety standards, etc.)
CBU=completely built unit(built entirely in Japan). On some of the trucks with beds during that period you'll see "IV" Incomplete vehicle. That's where they shipped the pickup to the US without the bed, installing a USA built bed at the port. The beds with a smooth exterior rail(no lip) were USA beds. The ones with the old style lip and exterior tie downs were Japanese beds.
One thing to keep in mind, these "options" aren't the same thing as the "options" or "packages" you'd see on the window sticker at the dealer. The Toyota Regional office in the USA would add more specific options. A/C, cruise, bumpers, floor mats, etc. etc. etc .

the body V stands for "van" (i know, semantics on this one), while the W in the options code stands for W-type transmission.
5F is "5-speed floor shift"

Your corrections make sense. Thank you.
The import tariffs on trucks is pretty significant. 25%

This 4r is amazing! I think we could see a new record set. Get a beer or snack before going through the 500+ photos!

That is one VERY clean 4Runner!
Look at that frame! That interior too!
I think we will see a new record (at least for 3VZE auto 4Runners!)

Those are both very nice vehicles. Very happy not to have to look at another cherry red Runner.
i respect the 4runner owner for keeping the 4 cyl manual!
I hope the pickup finds a good home and doesnt get turned into a slammed street truck.
