4Runner on 33x10.5, Gear Options?

How often do you get to use OD with that? Because when you are talking gearing on an auto tranny most people are really talking about the top gear (OD) and being able to stay in it into a slight hill or head wind. Yeah if you don't mind using the lower 3 gears all the time then you can get by with less than optimum gearing. With the 3.slo/auto combo and 33" tires I've run 4.88s, 5.29s, and 5.71s and I found the best combo to be 5.71s in just about any daily driving situation, including 80mph down the interstate. Oh of course 5.71s are better on the trails too.

It was a manual. While a couple hundred RPM change doesn't seem like much, with our motors the difference in being in the power band and not is so extreme that it makes a big difference in drivability!

So, with a 31x10.50" tire, 3.0, and A/T, would 5.29 gearing be adequate for hauling and towing. Or do you think 5.71's would be better?

Appreciate all the info, it's a big help.
That's unfortunate to hear but I would like a locker... Is my 3rd member intechangeable with another Toyota truck, I really wasn't looking to spend a ton of cash?

Your rear factory 488 3rd cannot be re-geared with after-market gears due to the mentioned reason of closer pinion offset. But it is worth something on Ebay or the FOR SALE bulletin boards. The front IFS carrier CAN be re-geared for whatever you choose though.
I ran 33"x10.50 tires and 571 gears in my 87 Runner with 22RE/auto and thoroughly enjoyed that decision. 3300 rpm on the freeway at 75 real miles per hour per GPS readings. Torque was nice and snappy off the line even with the little 22RE. If I had to do it again, it would still be 571 gears with that engine/tranny combo.
I also had an 88 Runner....3.0 liter and automatic with 31x 10.50 tires....529 gears. It was very quick off the line...especially with the fiberglass top off. The overall gear ratio was in the same ballpark as the 87 Runner with the 31"/571 combo so again, I was pretty happy. You could do 31" tires and 571 gears on your 3.0....but it won't quite be right on the highway at 75 miles per hour. But then again, some people never have that kind of highway use in mind so it could be the ticket for them.

Yes...your rear 3rd is inter-changeable with many truck 3rds....all the older 4 cylinder 3rds from 79~95....and the 87~95 "V6" 3rds will work just fine.
