Yeah I think I am going to buy the 4 cyl. I have been doing tons of research on the topic and i really like the 4clys, and like i said there really hard to find around here. It may cost me a little more but i think i am going to go with the 4cyl.
I was looking around on my local craigslist and i found another 4cyl forsale within driving range so now i have two to decide from. I will post the links to the trucks and see what you guys think.
I like the black one but it doesnt have any lift on it, but it has fewer miles.
They are both 94's and both are 5 speed manuals.

Here is the link to the black one.
http://eugene.craigslist.org/ctd/1032109531.html

Here is the red one.

http://eugene.craigslist.org/ctd/1023969449.html

What do you guys think the red one or the black one?

it says the ad for the black one has been deleted by author.

The red one looks good! Make sure the steering components (TRE's, Links, idler arm, pitman arm, etc) are in good condition. wider tires tend to put more stress on steering components.

The spark plugs take 15 minutes to change on the 3.0. It's super easy! With that said I would try looking for the 22RE if you can find one. They have a reputation for running & running.

Good choice, you're getting a remarkably dependable engine.

Look for if its leaking anything. Look for white smoke, or blue smoke out of the tail pipe. Little white smoke isn't bad but blown head gasket = a lot of smoke! LOL.

Anyway, there isn't much to go wrong on Toyota's!!!

Can't go wrong either way. Good luck bud! Post pics when you get it!

I have both at my access. My 91 with a 3vze and my girlriends 95 runner with a 22re.

I have worked on both and I can say the 22re is damn easy to work on. Its also pretty damn bullitproof. But people tend to forget to say that the 22re has its own share of headgasket problems. Considering the 3vze/22re availability in our trucks (the 3vze was picked something like 80% of the time) you will find just as many guys doing 22re headgasket jobs then the 3vze.

In anycase, the 3vze when taken care of is a fine motor. Its defantly got the power over the 22re, its also very smooth. She will rev up to 6,000rpm easily and smoothly

And as for mileage, its really how you drive. When I take it easy on the hwy (not over 60mph) I can get up 21-22mpg! And thats with over 5" of lift and 33" mud tires! Hello wind resistance!

I wouldnt want a 22re in my truck personally. My truck is plenty reliable and powerfull (for a toyota?). Either way both of these motors love gearing! If you want more pep gear your differentials down, it will work beautifully!

just look for rust on the frame.. and if it drives smoothly with no noises should be good... check 4wd and some slight noises might happen.. check the a/c and the tires..

then if you need to negotiate youll have some leverage if it all checks out... you got a nice truck..

some days driving my turbo diesel i do miss the high rev in 22re...but when ever i tow anything or put it in 4low and my hilux is a torque pig on roids.. im happy. o and i love the turbo sound!

if my 22re 4runner doesnt sell this weekend to a guy coming to look at it im going to put it on the road..

Have little to say other than good luck with your choice.
The only thing that will justify your purchase is your own satisfaction and what it costs to make it yours.

I didn't get the 4cly one i wanted.
I went to pick it up today and she sold it out from under me i am so she got offered 900 more in cash than what i was paying so she sold it out from under me.

So now its back to the drawing board.

I am looking at a 6cyl for only 2thousand dollars that needs some body work. I was thinking of buying it and fixing the body my self since i know some collision repair, and driving it around for a while untill i find another 22re 4wd 2nd gen one.

I really have my mind set on finding another 22re, but it may be a while. At least i would have a 3.0 to trade in on one if i find another.
And i would get the chance to drive a 3.0 around for a while to see the difference and see if I like it at all.

I am so angry right now i don't know what to say I had my hopes up so high.

Wootage!

It may have taken me a few more weeks of looking and looking and driving around and weeding out a bunch of crappy ones, but i finally found a 1990 black 22re 4wd sr5. It was 3800 and i talked him down to 3500, so i saved myself 1400 dollars by not buying the other one that got sold out from under me. Plus this one i bought has pace setter headers, and just seems to run more smoothly.
It only has a few minor things wrong with it that I am going to fix myself. One of the things is the back window only rolls up and down 50% of the time by itself but if you pull it up or push it down then it works fine.

My wife is funny she did not want me to get a 4cly because she claimed they where underpowered and not as reliable. All it took to convince her otherwise was showing her all the blown head gasket 6cyl ones on criagslist.

I however made the mistake of letting her drive it home after buying it now i think i am going to have to fight her for it lol.
She was driving it on the interstate on the way home and she was doing like 70-80 with no problems and was passing other cars, so i decided to call her and say still think the 4cly is to slow and under powered? LOL she said nope and that was that.

I will post some pics of the rig later.
Thanks for all the help guys.

I own a 4cyl 22re. I've driven the 6cyl 4runner. For reliability, choose the 22re. For speed, get the 6cyl. After driving the 6cyl and then mine...I still prefer the 22re. In the future, if I was given the choice to choose between a 22re or the 6cyl...it's be the 22re for sure.

Damn after reading all this I'm a little less excited about my 89 4runner. I wanted one because the back comes off and its a damn yota! 5speed v6 I had a 1989 22re pickup extracab.. I fell in love with the older yotas after that. But I'm hoping it was well taken care of (engine) because the truck itself looks super clean. I'll post pics once I pick it up this friday.
