Well...all that I have to say is that if you have any oil on the dipstick, then you are in the same boat as most of the older toyota engines and losing a quart of oil every so many miles. Just need to check it every week to keep it topped off if that's the case. That's not a good thing that you let it go so long that you needed 2 1/2 qts.

BTW - check that oil cooler bolt.

The distance between L and H on the dipstick is only about a quart. If your dipstick is reading L, you have about 4 quarts in the system.

mine leaks a little too and my oil turns dark fairly quickly but there are NO leaks and no smoke! what gives??

I looked at seafoam yesterday and it didn't look like that removed/broke up sludge. I'm going to drain all the oil saturday and refill. I put some lucas additive in this time around and it seemed to help the pressure thing (also the fact that I added 2.5 quarts of 15w40) I think saturday I'll fill, then drive around a bunch with that seafoam, and then drain again that night.

IMO the lucas is just a thickening agent. If you're worried about low pressure, just run a thicker oil. It'll lube a lot better and prolly won't get by the rings as easily.

I'm more worried about possible sludge, being that it's got 161k on it and I'm not the original 2 owners

Whats the best way to degrease the engine. My 95 seems to be leaking from the cooler, valve cover gaskets, and rear main. It was leaking bad from the oil filter when I bought it. The filter was so loose, I could wiggle it around so some of the oil on the engine is from that. I am still leaking a quart every few days but cant tell where its coming from because there is more oil on the outside of the engine than the inside.(seriously)

I've found that my driver's valve cover rear leak makes it look like I have a rear main leak as well, (which I might but I'm hoping I don't)

If your CEL comes on, and it appears that it has a couple of times, why don't you do the obvious and check for code(s) ???

If you have checked already, what code(s) did you get ?

Sup sup chimmike, might want to do a compression check real quick, followed by a leak down. If you are dumping 1 qt in about what 4hrs of drive time, something is wrong...

My 3vze would dump about 1.5qts every 3000 miles but mine leaked from damn near every gasket! lol I bet its getting by the rings and being burned. Either that or the PCV valve is stuck open and you are just burning oil off that way.

but the leak down would let you know if the rings were on the weak side.

I haven't even been able to swap out all the spark plugs yet, let alone do a compression check! lol.

the codes were: EGR and rich condition.

It's more than 4hrs of driving, and what driving it is, is hard trail driving.

OK, I alsohave a 3.0 and I had major work done to it. New Valves, HG's, Timing belt, etc. After about 3000 miles, I noticed that it needed 1.5 qt's of oil. Is this normal after have this type of work done to it? Also I have about 145K on it.

Of course it's not normal.
It's not normal for practically any vehicle to burn 1.5 quarts of oil every 3000 miles.

the gunk gel oil remover is good as well it stays on the motor better than the regular gunk remover.
both work if you fallow the instructions.
