31" - 32" - or 33" with 4.88 gears. What you think?

I was gonna stay out of this one, oh well.
About tire size, smaller vs. larger, BIGGER TIRES=SMALLER ROCKS.
About lift, AS MUCH AS YOU NEED TO CLEAR THE LARGEST POSSIBLE TIRE.
This is my experience and my belief.

If we are talking about a 3.slow that came from the factory with 31"s (mostly the SR5s) than the MT came with 4.56 and the auto with 4.88s.
If your engine is running good you should be able to haul it around quite well with that gearing & tire. Don't expect a race car, but it'll get the job done.
When I switched to a 33" (equivalent) I lost a lot of seat of the pants power. Overdrive (5th) was useless. Now remember, not only do you get an increase in radius, but normally a large increase in weight to go with. This weight change has a huge impact on performance.
I changed to 4.88s (stock was 4.56) and it feels good now. I would guess that an auto trans would respond similarly.
My truck is 'lifted' but not by much. That is, no suspension redo, just stiffer torsion bars and rear springs. I also have a 2" body lift. Only had to beat a little sheetmetal right behind the front tire, though I believe this is more about the offset I chose than the diameter - my truck's a good 3" wider than stock, such that the outside edge of the tire is even with the bushwacker flairs.
As to what you have in there now. Lift the rear end, put a mark on the pinion & housing and turn BOTH rear wheels 1 full turn counting the revolutions of the pinion. That'll tell you were you are now.
Hope that helps.

If I gave you a truck with 33" tires and one with 31" tires and I told you to wheel them down a trail, and I didn't tell you which had which tires, and I did the bare minimum next to nothing to clear the 33" tires, I guarantee that from the drivers seat, you couldn't tell the difference in offroad performance, but you might from the loss of power, braking, & gearing.
