300km / 186 miles to a full TANK! 22RE!
Well boys and girls i seem to have a little problem where my truck loves to guzzle gas.
Its a 1986 Toyota 4Runner, 22re, Automatic. Totally bone stock except for some bald 31's ( pretty much 30's lol ).
My truck gets horrible mileage. I can get at best 300km/186miles to a tank of fuel. Why? I Couldn't tell you.
I though maybe it was because it had different injectors in it, well i switched them out but no difference.
No check engine lights ( yes it does work, comes on when ignition before you start it ).
No catalytic converter, just straight pipe to muffler at rear. All factory gears etc.
This is by far the worst vehicle i've ever owned when it came to fuel economy. My 1982 Camaro Z-28 350 4bbl was better, as well as my 89 F-150 shorty 4x4, and my 92 crown vic 4.6L v-8...
My buddys lifted chev shorty with 35's, 350, etc gets better mileage.
Also one thing that would be good to note - the truck kinda "chugs" at idle, worse when in gear. Possibly out of time?? That wouldn't make it that hard on fuel i don't imagine though.

guess you wouldn't like to hear about my trip yesterday from Salinas, CA on my way home:
start at
145 Kern St, Salinas CA 93905
to my first gas stop at:
6539 Milliken Ave, Rancho Cucamonga CA 91701
21+ mpg (i'm ignoring about 1/2 gallon of fuel due to clicking and topping off)

I can't see how an auto can rob that much fuel mileage unless these toyota autos are absolute pigs...
I've owned V-8s with autos before that got better mileage....The crown vic would actually get twice the mileage of this truck and it was a 4.6L v8 auto..

Lol if thats the case i'll scrap my plans for bigger tires, gears, and lift and go find a 2nd Gen 22re 5-speed and mod the hell outta it, or get a fullsize domestic with a v-8 again lol and use this truck for summer, its almost an antique ( go antique insurance ! )
In the meanwhile i suppose i could try an 02 sensor...I've only got one, stuck in the manifold...1 wire.

Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter all done in the last 2 months.
I suppose i can try and do some stuff tomorrow like break out the ohm meter and test the AFM, TPS, coolant temp sensor, etc anything that would lead it to use more fuel.
ALSO. should have noted this before. The truck does run rich, as confirmed by black smoke out the tailpipe ( not a whole lot just barely noticeable ).
Will check timing too.
Any more ideas are welcome!

If you drive conservatively and your vehicle is working well, you should be able to get 20mpg or so, just like Abe. Even with your auto, you should be able to get 18-20, without much trouble. So, find out why it's running rich and fix it and see what happens. O2 sensor is a good place to start as it can be fubar and still not set off the CEL. If the O2 sensor has 50k or more on it (or if you don't know) you should probably replace it just for grins. Might also consider having your injectors rebuilt. It's not all that expensive. Adjust your valves -- that's cheap, though it probably won't help all that much. Check your exhaust system (manifold etc) as leaks can foul up the O2 sensor reading, so I am told.
And finally, as our dear leader points out, air up your tires.

*laugh* Ol' Abe may miss or add a letter every now and then but he know's his yota's. Hell you can walk out on the back porch and whisper a 22re problem into the wind and he'll hear you and send guidance.
Folks go to church to pray to God for help, here we pray to Abe.
