IMO, the "early" Ford MPFI is probably one of the more flexible designs out there, even with speed density. Moates.net has had a J3 port tuner for most of the ECUs for several years and now has the new Quarter Horse tuner, a much more deluxe version. I agree that it's still not as flexible as a standalone, though.

I get about 14mpg, but I'm not trying to get good mileage.

I have a love/hate relationship with my 3.0. It's a good, solid motor that will run forever if taken care of and for that, I love it. It's an underpowered dog that can't get out of it's own way most of the time and doesn't get the best of mileage. It hates towing my little 900lb trailer(even empty) and likes to bog down in 4hi climbing hills and for that, I hate it.

I've heard of people swapping in the 3.4's, but after recently experiencing the power(or lack of power) the 3.4 has I don't see much of a gain from doing that swap. If I were to swap it would be a small V8, not another underpowered V6.

Ok guys, on a side note, 3vze = pain in the arse! for me, ok, nuff said. Need some pro input.
Got this 90' runner for the son a year and few months now. Guy said he put in a 100k motor in it with redone heads. Started to miss about 4 months ago , then heard a valve clakcing away for about a month and it stopped. Missing the same, now it is blowing blue smoke? I don't think it is a head gasket issue anymore unless the head or heads have bad valve seals? But now, when I punch the gas, lots of blue smoke. Clogged PCV?
Otherwise the the truck is good. Any input please.

two words- scheduled maintenance... and if you buy a used vehicle get maintenance done then- don't trust anyone if you can help it.
people have to stop thinking that just because it's "X" or "Y" with a good reputation that things don't go wrong. Even when everything is done right, somtimes things still go wrong.

Nothing wrong with the 3.slow, it's an extremely reliable rock solid motor with a few kinks (the newer ones closer to '95 are much better), just compared to all the other Toyota motors it's probably one of the worst ever conceived (that is compared to all the other toyota motors)
