3.0 to 22r swap?

I was wondering if anyone out there has ever heard of actually swapping out a 3.0 with a 4 banger in a 2nd gen. 4runner? I've always had an affinity for 22r's and am tired of paying for fuel with the 3.0 (not to mention dealing with the pesky a340h tranny). this actually brings me to my second question, would I also have to switch to a different transmission? I don't necessarily have a problem with auto trannies but have had a number of problems with my a340h. Thanks in advance for any input.

btw--if swap is possible (as well as plausible), what would be an approximate cost for this massive transformation?

man i hate the a340h, and if i could i would swap it out for the w56 anyday. sorry to stick that in here but i would. now if youre gonna swap in a 4banger, the squirrels are gonna have a harder time with an auto. You know how bad the performance of the 3.0 is with the auto? it has to be even worse with a 4 cyl. If youre gonna swap, id say go all the way and get the 5 speed also. Plus, you cant regear the transfer case on the a340h because you cant take it apart. with a 5 speed you can add a crawler or regear. just my opinion

you probably can't due to emissions testing. You have to put in a motor of the same year or newer.

pardon my ignorance on this but would you happen to know the motor from a 92 or newer? Is it a 2.4? 2.7? any idea on estimates to make that transition? Also, I bet it would be considerably more expensive to swap from a auto to a 5 spd huh? btw, i appreciate everyones input. thanks a bunch

toyota used both a 2.4 and 2.7 engines... however the 2.7s didnt come out as the 4 cylinder until the tacoma in 95

before the tacoma the 4 cylinder engine was the 2.4l 22r or 22re

the 22R was produced from '81-90 in the US and the 22R-E was produced from '83-95. after that, the tacomas came with the 2.4l 2RZ-FE and the 2.7l 3RZ-FE.

No the trannys are not compatible. If you want auto you will have to stick in a40. With a 22R I would recommend a 5 speed so you can get a little more power.

You'd be better off selling the 6cy rig and buying a different truck.

Get a 1st gen instead!

I am planning the same swap...

I recently purchased a 94 pick-up with an LC engeneering 4 cylinder and a W56 with double boxes it already has a solid axle so all of this will be transfered over to my 4runner and I would imagine that all the wiring mounts and accessories will make the swap a piece of cake! My only chalenge will be the front suspension...
