22RE 2nd-gens are quite hard to find, because the 22RE was an optional motor? I beleive the 3V-ZE came standard on all 2nd-gens. Well, they're out there, just take your time and search.

Problem is that the 22re is a little small for that heavy truck. IIRC the runner was about 1500lbs heavier then the truck so that 115hp has to work hard to get it going. Things like freeway driving become a huge pain in the pooper unless you mod the engine. I've had a lighter 1st gen runner with the 22re and a 3rd gen truck with the 3.0 and I'll take the 3.0 any day for city and hwy driving.
I imagine they didn't sell a lot of 22re runners after people had their first test drive.

Ah, I guess that makes sense. My current 1st gen with the 22re really does not do too bad, though you have to treat it like a lawnmower sometimes and floor it to make it do anything.
How much heavier is the 2nd gen runner than the 1st gen? Is there some link on this site to a list of the GVWR's?

Having had both, and currently with the 22RE in my 90, I will take it any day over the 3.slow. I only loose a little HP, gain MPG of 18 -22, versus 12-14, and a strong bullet-proof engine. I would take the time to find one, you will be happier over all. BTW- I get up to highway speed with no problems, even with 31's, and can easily maintain 75-80 mph, and that is with over 210K on the motor.

The 3.0 isn't a useless engine. Several of us have them and haven't had any trouble. Get's 19 mpg during summer and 18.4 during winter. Torque comes on low and runs all day long at 70 mph, although 75 mph seems like a strain.
I've wondered if the 4Runners assembled after Jan 95 (my manufacture date) were more reliable. Might be a nice little science project for one of our younger YotaTechers.

2nd gen 22RE 4Runners are hard to come buy. I've seen a few on Autotrader and ebay, and there are members here that have them.
I never knew you could get a 22re in 2wd. That's really rare. I thought all 22re 4runners had 4x4. Learn something all the time here.
My 3.0 has been pretty good too. The previous owner had the HGs done around 134k, and I'm almost at 196k with no major problems (other than the water pump, but that's regular maintenance).
If I buy another 2nd gen, I would get one with a V6 and manual tranny.
