2nd gen 4runner universal rear wiper mod
I searched around for rear wiper replacements on my 1990 4runner. But I couldn't fine anything but factory wipers for about 30 bucks. Maybe cheaper if you live close enough to a dealer to not pay Shipping. So I decided to see how different they were from your normal 14" Wally World wiper blade. Turns out the construction is identical. Only difference is the bracket that is press fit on the frame.
So remove the pin on the old wiper, remove the pin on the new wiper, dill the holes for a bolt and you're done.
Here is the old bracket.
Grind lightly on the end of the pin.
Once it is ground down past the head, give the pin a tap with a hammer and punch (or screw driver)
Slide the pin out. I chose to save the little flat spring in the bracket. I don't know if it is critical or not.
Drill out one side of the bracket for a 5mm bolt. One side is already 5mm. Slide in a bolt to make sure it fits. I think mine was 20mm? Or was it 25?
Do the same to the new wiper blade. The pin in this one was less than 5mm so I had to drill both sides. Still a piece of cake to drill sheet metal.
Insert the spring inside the wiper flame frame and slide the bracket over the frame. Put in your bolt. I used a nylon lock nut so that I could tighten it lightly and still be sure the bolt won't come out..
Install on the vehicle with the tiny machine screws and die cast wedge thing. Those screws are either japaneese Phillips or Phillips #1. A #2 Phillips will just strip them.
Mine wiped perfectly. It also looks like it slides up in place correctly when you turn it off.
My total investment was 7 or 8 bucks for a 14" blade at Walmart. And just over 1 dollar for a bolt and lock nut at the hardware store. Working time was about 15 to 20 min.
Enjoy.
