sounds like you ether have really bad luck or didnt maintain it that well? lol spun bearings? blown HG's? just let it burn oil until it blew? no engine can survive that long like that. but if you where going to rebuild one of them then i would go 22re and throw a cam in it!

Well all I could tell you is my experience with the 22RE.I bought a truck with the 22RE in it and it was a 1994 and had a 154,000.The guy I bought it from said that the timing chain broke, before I got it,and it bent a valve and he got it fixed and had a receipt for $1,100.So I got it and took it home and welded the exhaust back where they break below the manifold.Everybody said that if you keep timing chain changed they will run forever. So when I started it I started hearing the noise it makes right when it cranks just for a second or two and they told me that was the timing chain. Now let me say I had only had this thing for about 6 months maybe 5,000 miles.I took it to a guy who does everybody`s timing chains on toyotas around me and he put one on it.Got it back and about 10,000 miles later I was driving home and turning in the road I lived on droped to 2nd because,it starts a climb, and not abusing just what you have to do to make it up and I hear a noise and loose power so I pull over and it starts skipping so I check guages everything is good so I put it in low range with out the hubs locked and limp it to my grandmother`s.Bring my trailer and take it back to the guy that done my timing chain. He calls me and says I am going to need a motor that the bottom (skirt part)of a piston come apart and showed me the pieces. So I put a motor in and about a year later starts skipping again and blown head gasket.Got it fixed about 2 years later blown head gasket. And after I replaced the engine this seemed to be an every other year thing so I sold it after the 3rd one.I got 19mpg with stock ugly tires so I changed with 31x10.50 then from there on it was 16mpg with no power. And if you thought of pulling something you better have another truck.I did put the header on it and it made a HUGE difference. But I am going to try a V6 this time and my son has a 22R and a V6.

well the motors a i blew where from parts trucks that sat in the medow on the farm for 5 years and the other one sat for 11 years hahah and my truck had a 3.0 when i got it and i loved it but it was all rebuilt in 1997 with new heads, gaskets, t belt, and waterpump and didnt even have 70k miles on it before it blew again so i want something that im not working or over loading the engine i was thinking a 22re becase i have plenty of bottom ends and 3 whole engines but i also have a 2 3.0s one grenaded and onee ikn a parts truck that is unnone condition i just dont want to spend a lot of cash im on a budget i dont make a lot on the farm i work at

lol jeepwilson thats some bad luck lol. ether that or the guy who you trusted to be so great with timing chains was a crack head? lol. skipping teeth on the timing gear isnt un common but i have never heard them slip that bad? my 22re was rebuilt 100k ago and it has had no problems, the rebuild also cost over 4k so it wasn't any half a** deal. sounds to me like every time you got a timing chain re done, that the tensioner wasn't working or wasn't reset? i don't know man but the 3vze isn't going to be any better, it is far more work to keep running. and you aslos said you up sized tires to 31"s, which means that you gearing was off which will give you much worse power and mileage. 31"s need 4.56 gears, 33"s need 4.88's, 35"s and up need 5.29's. your stock 4.10 gears aren't ment to handle anything bigger then a 29" tire and it will say what tires came stock with the truck in you door jam. if you had your engine rebuilt by a pro and regeared your diffs you would be very blown away by how much of a difference it makes. oyah and if you wanted to go with a more powerful engine like a v6, then skip the 3vze and do a 5vzfe, it has DOHC heads and makes allot more power than the 3vze!

why didn't Toyota just use the 7mge instead of 3vze, way more torque and easier to work on. They had head gasket issues buts wants it fixed you should never have a problem again.

3.4 swap is only going to be like 1000 more then a 3vze and its worth that and more from the power and how reliable it is!
7mge is a good engine and would be an easier swap than a a 3vze. but seriously if you went to the lengths of the swap you might as well go with the turbo 7mgte, 230hp stock, pull the head, arb head studs, some thumpy cams, 4" turbo back, turbo timer, and you would be around 300 + at the crank depending on boost and on the stock turbo. and if you wanted to go nuts you could go a full motec setup and i bigger turbo and shoot for 500hp hehehe.a new HG and arp head studs torqued over spec will eliminate the HG problem and then you can douple the power of the 3vze and still get 20 mpg plus 7mgte's aren't that expensive, at least to the mother of all turbo engines... 2JZ hehehehe

Yea I`m definately go to weigh my optionns out before being dead set on what I put back in it.The 89 I picked up the other day has a V6 in it that the guy says the harmonic balancer came apart on.So I`m going to pull it out and see how bad it is internally. He says it will crank but it sounds bad.Which I would say it probably destroyed the crank and no telling what else.My son just bought a 85 22R and a 88 V6 and the V6 has 294,000 miles on it so it has no power. It seems like the 22R would be the easiest to work on by far.I guess time will tell.Which I do have a 302HO with aluminum heads with harness and computer still hooked to it in the basement and a HP 76mm turbo kit for that motor as well. But I would say that tires would smoke and if it ever hooked that parts would fly.You would think that more people would put Ford motors in when doing the V8 swaps just for the distributor being that more easily to get to.

IMO, the V6 was an after thought AFTER they designed the truck.
IOW's, the engine bay was fine for a KZ or R series.
America has a different economy than other country's and we required more power...
In order for Toyota to compete... Yuck... enter the 3.0.
On the 7MG... If you think a measly 3.0 V6 is a tight fit, try bolting an in-line 6 in your truck.
And...
"Not withstanding the technical sophistication and powerful output of the engine, it was plagued with the problem of regularly blowing head gaskets due to improper torque specifications of the head bolts from the factory. The 7M-GTE turbo version suffered from the same problem. Permanent fixes typically involved a metal after-market head gasket, higher torque settings (usually 70-80 ft·lbf) and upgrading to head studs (through the ubiquitous ARP and their hardware) rather than bolts."
In-liners are the KINGS of torque. End of story.
Personally, I'd love to swap a 3F-e in a 4Runner and see how that works
BTW,
7M: Bore: 83.0 mm (3.27 in) Stroke: 91.0 mm (3.58 in)
22R: Bore: 91.9 mm (3.62 in) Stroke: 88.9 mm (3.5 in)
3Fe: Bore: 94mm (3.7 inches) Stroke: 95mm (3.74 inches)

Actually we live in the "age of information" so to search ahead is nothing unique. Though I do appreciate one who looks for themself. But don't get it confused your not the only person on this board nor on the internet who have an IQ above a toaster.
So interesting we found something to agree on.
Too bad the 3vze sucks crack; 22RE rocks get over it

I may do an engine swap someday.

yeah tried4x2signN the 7mgte is a torque machine and when the turbo spools it really fly's! the head gasket was an problem though, but as you said it was an improper torquing, and bad headgasket. tons of guys put arp head studs in and the metal HG and plow over 20lbs of boost through it all day long! at least with the 7m you can prevent the HG blow unlike the 3vze where it's a guessing game lol. though i have noticed that headers and running toyota red coolant in a 3vze helps allot with diverting the heat from the head. little expensive though...

yep the red coolant is thicker, the green stuff apparently also is a bit corrosive to toyota engines? this is what i have heard anyways. the 3vze was ment to be ran with it and you should really only use toyota red in it. thats what im going to switch to after i do the water pump
