22RE "ticking"

Changed my valve cover gasket yesterday. Followed the book, step by step. after reassembly, the engine runs with a pronounced "ticking" noise. I it drives and runs fine otherwise. Guys I have asked to analyze have said valves stuck, lifters bent and a bad timing chain/broken timing chain guides. It ran GREAT before I changed the valve cover gasket.....so what the hell?

You lost your watch?

All 22REs tick like a sewing machine.

Adjust the valves.

The injectors also have a kind of ticking sound. If its not your valves then its the injectors.

Sounds like you over-tightened the cover and the rocker arms are just barely hitting it when they lift. Turn the truck on and slowly loosen the cover nuts little by little and see if it goes away.

x2... i had a friend do just this a few years back. Changed his valve cover gasket and had a loud tick afterward. Took a week or so oftrying to figure it out until someone else suggested over tightened valve cover. On his next birthday I got him a torque wrench to replace his " armstrong" version.

Lol no problem dude. Glad I could help. Just make sure you didn't ruin the gasket doing that. You might need to replace it again.

Ya mine ticks more than it should at light throttle not under load but just rolling around in 1st or2nd but u hit it and it go`s away tried thicker got better idle press then shimmed the spring in the pump made it a little quieter but what did the most was pulling a huge load on a heavy trailer it shut up alot for a couple days but its kinda back are these known for bad piston pins.. rod bearings usually get worse under load in other engines I`ve had !!!
