Issue seems to be resolved!! I was able to tweak the plate to run out at least good enough. I was only able to get the run out down to about .014" (the factory spec is .008") but the trans is back in & there is no interferance with the starter. I still need to do some work to the motor & brakes before I can road test it, but it is running decent.

It will be interesting to see if you have a vibration when you get up to speed. I don't know what problems it being out of spec would cause.

I'm not sure either but I will report back about it once I get it running good enough to find out. I think it is worth mentioning that for now the 4runner is going to be trailered to the off road park & wheeled, won't see much action on the street.

To install a Torque converter into Gm or Ford auto you have to put in pressure on as you spin it clockwise and counter clockwise so that it engages the front pump. The Toyota FSM doesn't give any details other than install the torque converter into the transmission. It does say to use a straight edge across the front of the transmission housing and measure from the center of the torque converter hub to this straight edge with a caliper. If the torque converter is seated and where it should be this measurement should be 20mm.
The 7mm shim goes against the crank, then the flexplate with the dished (concave side) facing out towards the transmission, then the thin torque plate against the flexplate rolled edge facing out and the bolts. Generally if a torque converter has a specific orientation the stud pattern is offset so that it will only bolt up in one configuration. I didn't notice if the bolt pattern was offset or not, if you need that I can go to the garage and take a closer look, mine's laying on the floor!
